He stated that it was his opinion that if SO many of us are out there performing in vests, using a JJ Backdrop and a Lefler table, that we all look SO much the same in the public's eyes. So, he does have a strong point there. But what could we really do different???

Tommy, every time you sell a product attach a note that reads, "please don't wear a vest when performing this trick." But seriously, Brad does make a good point. A magician should be judged by what he does and not by the way he looks. But then again, doesn't it help when an actor looks the part? Not sure I would want to hire a plumber wearing a suit. Or do serious business with a salesman wearing a clown suit. I don't know. Tom

I will share with you that Brad did say to me at Kidabra what I believe was a compliment. It was something like "Roger, I will admit that you are a unique, one of a kind performer in every way. You have defined your image, and there is definitely only one Jolly Roger." I believe he was right( for better or worse!!)! JR

When I was a kid growning up, my impression of magicians were they all wore tuxedos. The magician doing our school shows wore a suit and tie. Doug Henning was probably the first nationally known magician in my memory that broke that mold of what magicians normally wore. So if kids' magicians shouldn't all wear vests (which we all don't) so we don't all look alike, should we all be wearing suits or tuxedos so that we look the same as most adult entertainers? I believe that if you are smart, you are going to dress to best define the character you are trying to portray.
I think that most of us dress according to the character we portray. Colorful clothing seems to be more appropriate for kids and a vest is a little more casual than a suit or tux. It also gives you more pockets to operate out of, so along with the comfort, there comes the convenience. Casual comfort seems to work better for birthday parties than it does for stage shows anyway. The Great Zucchini best proves the point that the character is best defined by the performer and not what they wear. But then you have performers such as Jolly Roger or Silly Billy who have created costuming that is fitting for their characters that is a unique, trademarked look that would be hard for others to copy... not because of their clothes, because of their characters. I certainly agree that being unique is much better for having a memorable image, but at the same time, dressing in a way that is totally incompatible with your character can be hazardous to your image. |

Tommy keep wearing what you wear. Some of those costumes look like clown costumes and yours look magical.
