I just receive my "David Dee designed type" 20 page free sales pitch for Quentin Reynolds seven 40 minute magic show videos, the Professional Secrets Manual, and the Resource Guide ($597) or the Gold edition which includes six CD audio marketing course and the Business Builder Manual, One Hour Phone Consultation, Making Your Props, and Getting on TV manual for $797.
($100 dollar discount coupon enclosed if purchased before the end of January.) Since this material deals strictly with entertaining kids, I am posting it here because it has a better chance of being read. Has anyone gotten this course? Or at least viewed it. Is his humor more English and transportable to the US? It is a lot of money, without knowing anything about him beside his "Five Minutes with a Pocket Handkerchief" video. The material in this free booklet focuses on what he will do for you using "the benefit to you" sales pitch. Any comments out there? He has advertised with full-page ads in the Major Magic Publications (Another Advertising Sales trick.)

I know many people here at the Café still have sour tastes in their mouths regarding Quentin's "free lecture notes" offer that resulted in a sales pitch and our names on his mailing list. I too felt deceived by Mr. Reynolds but have since seen his 5 Minutes with a Pocket Hanky video and am also interested to hear others' opinions on his course.
While I do not have his course, a friend of mine allowed me to listen to an excerpt of one of Quentin's audio CDs from the course (gold edition) and the advice I heard was extremely helpful. Perhaps others who own the course can chime in and give some reviews. |

I saw Quentin’s lecture at Blackpool. Going on that, I wouldn't buy his course.

I have also emailed him to ask to be removed from his mailing list, but I am still getting stuff.

Neale,
I think he is foolish to keep sending me these things. They must cost him a bunch. Is this what Dave Dee teaches? Edd

Quentin’s one-kilometer long sales pitch is a fine specimen of a Dave Dee marketing. Having read a glut of similarly styled sales letters (both online and offline), I’m already inoculated, immunized, jaded, apathetic and bulletproofed from this type of marketing. Those who will send me similar letters may do so at their own financial risk.
Ben Benjay Manila, Philippines P.S. By the way I bought Quentin’s video “5 Minutes with a Pocket Handkerchief” after reading two sentences of an online promotional statement lifted from the blurb of the video cover. Now, I’m giving you guys a hint on how to make your pitches to me: say it in two sentences. |

Hi, Yes it is, however, foolish it is not. The returns financially are very high. Particularly as by offering the free notes (as he called them) he created a very targeted list. I dare say that there is a further back end (more products available after the initial purchase) and that list (those who already purchased) will be even hotter. This way of marketing is not down to Dave Dee he is just the main person who filtered the general ideas to marketing magic specifically. Although I no longer need to market actively, I know a lot about it and still keep up to date. phillip |

This is really interesting, how we all have been "numbed" to the "David Dee Marketing Technique", even though it really isn't his idea, and it does work! It is a standard marketing technique and I get tons of junk mail like this (non-magic) every month, which say "Trash me without Reading". It's a TV infomercial on paper.
It's a name for the magic industry to relate to! As for the specific target group, Magicians, particularly Children's entertainers. I'm not opposed to spending this kind of money, however, humor, does not cross cultures very well, especially for kids. Quentin is relying on his successful "one five minute tape" to push him into the millionaire status with this new sales pitch. I enjoyed the show portion of the tape but found the afterward conversation boring and fell asleep. Again $797 is a lot of money. I didn't mind spending this for John Kaplan's Fund Raising program because it was worth the knowledge I gained. (My personal opinion.) The same with Jim Snack’s two e-books for $99 dollars and Eric Paul’s $99 dollar book and Eric's Ed Harris’ $27 CD for Magician's Clip Art. I spent over $200 for Eric Sharp's Material and a lot of it was stuff you need to build to use his technique. The PAL VHS Tapes I converted were practically useless to me. I now think the Millionaire Magician is not worth the $200 unless you are going to need agents names and addresses. I haven't even looked at that since my initial review. Compared to the practicality of the others mention above the Millionaire Magician sold me on his "David Dee Technique" Now I am really caution when some one tries to sell me by this method. Yes, I wasted a lot of money, now I am going to really "wait and see" before I jump into big purchases like this. I'd rather get a good lighting system or sound system for this kind of money. Still I would like a "honest" review of Quentin's material. Now based on what Phillip said, there is more selling afterwards, so $797 is the Starting Point for spending a lot more! By the way Phillip, I "bit" on that FREE NOTES advertisement, so it tells me I am still susceptible to the powerful classic advertising come-ons. I should know better!

Hi Den, I did say I ASSUME there would be more products as this is normal marketing practice ... though I do not have the materials in question so I do not know for sure. Phillip |

Hi Dennis,
I bought Quentin's set mostly because of his Five Minutes with a Handkerchief. I too have purchased all of Eric Sharp's and Jim Smith's material. Quentin's set is expensive but I have gone from buying lots of videos, books, and tricks to learning to put on a really good show. Quentin includes seven different shows that he taped with different aged kids. He, of course, explains all the tricks from the shows but it was watching his interaction with the kids that most interested me. Watching his shows has given me much more confidence in doing my shows. There is some nice marketing material, but if you have Eric's course then you have some similar material. I bought it to learn performance for kids and I was not disappointed. The business side has some ideas I have not seen elsewhere, but much of it I have seen elsewhere. Spend the money if you think your show could be improved by watching someone who has done this work for years. Different subject. There is a good call sheet in " CREATIVE IDEAS FOR BALLOON ENTERTAINERS". It is a $20 CD available from http://www.tmyers.com. $20 is a bit much for a call sheet if you do not do balloons but I like it a lot. A call sheet is the form you collect information on when talking about a show with someone who calls in. |
