What is the best length of chain (or cord) on a pendulum for responsiveness?

As a rule, the longer the cord, the slower the pendulum responds. That's why it's always an idea to use a "break." This is a point halfway up the cord (I have a small bead in mine, halfway up the chain) that becomes the "hold." (As a rule of thumb, if you've put the pendulum into a spectator's hand and it's unresponsive -- try moving the place where they're holding it halfway up the chain.)
On the flip-side -- you also need to consider the size of your audience. Stage shows really need a longer pendulum (or a video screen) to be seen. David

Now that is useful information. Thank you David. I just put a 10 -12 inch chain on the weight a called it good. The difference between a pro and wantabe.

The best length for responsiveness is 10 cm of effective suggestion.
;) Great suggestions , David Best

Also,if you have a bracelet you use as a impromptu pendi, the size of your wrist will work well for the length!

The pendulum chain that I use is 10 inches long. The holding point can easily be adjusted.

Those familiar with "legitimate" works on the pendulum know that the length of the pendulum is described as its "rate," and the correct rate varies depending on what you are looking for with the pendulum (as in dowsing for precious metals, water, etc.) or what you are using it for on a psychic level. The rate is easily adjusted by either wrapping the cord around your finger or a pencil, etc.
As I recommended in my book "The Pendulum of Fate," Letheridge's "The Power of the Pendulum" is an excellent resource for those interested in how pendulums are actually used by dowsers. For our purposes, though, about ten inches or so is optimal. |

The periodicity of a pendulum is proportional to its length and acceleration due to gravity. Here are the periods for various lengths of pendulum:

If using a multi-bob pendulum the length of each cord will have to vary more than 1/2" to give any easy control. A longer difference is better but it is ideal to give the appearance that each cord bob hangs about the same by tilting the rod. ANy length less than 4" is a problem for me as my hands shake anyway.

[no need to try to disguise different lengths]. However, if that works for you ...great. I have a formula that I use for Multi-Pendulums based on: the length of the crossrod; the number of pendulums attached to the crossrod; the comparative weights of the various 'bobs'; the spacing between the individual pendulums. As far as length for a single pendulum... my 'personal' calculations are based on: chain/string type {thickness/fineness}; total length; 'bob' weight; and final testing. A big thank-you to Docc Hilford for turning me on to 'Mini Pendulums'. Properly constructed...they work splendidly....and as Docc says [I paraphrase]...they move so easily....they are great for use with skeptics. That said...I agree with David...the size of the audience is important. One would not want to use a Mini Pendulum for a stage presentation. As with any effect...visibility and conviction is imperative. Rich |
