A lot of it depends on the venue, the way you'd handle a heckler at a Masonic ladies night is a million miles from how you would deal with one in an East End pub. In the East End the gloves are off, the audience expects no mercy and often the heckler actually thinks he's doing you a favour by heckling. In a pub or working men's club do your homework before the event and you usually know the name of the person most likely to heckle. My standard question to a landlord booking me are "Who's the local loudmouth, who are the main characters, has anything unusual or special happened, is there a rival establishment etc.
If you know the local loudmouth is Johnny Hammer (that was an actual heckler in a gig in Hackney), the moment someone heckles and you reply "I bet that's Johnny Hammer" you get the audience on your side regardless of whether it's Johnny or not because half of them were thinking the same, and if it is Johnny, he's on side too because you used his name and game him the attention he craves. No matter how brutal you are with a heckler though you need to keep that twinkle in your eye, it's all in fun. And if the heckler is funny acknowledge it before burying him, digging him up and burying him again Mark |

Great work from Thomas and Rainer as expected. This is a much needed book and I was intrigued when invited to contribute. I had no idea about the scale and depth of this project. The book is well produced and chocked full of serious insights on performance. The consistency across chapters is remarkable.

You know you made the bad choice in dealing with a "heckler" when he comes at the end of the show with a few burly friends !..

This book is dynamite!
Mine came and I couldn't put it down. Love it! After becoming acquainted with the lads from Paralabs and spending a few days with Rainer in Germany, all I have to say is they are a pair of F*****g genius'. I saw things I wouldn't have believed if I hadn't seen it. This book has some amazing pieces of material from many different awesome performers, highly recommend it. Pete x |

Looking forward to catching up with this.
Those of you who have read my Notebook #1 would know it contains an essay with my thoughts on heckling and a routine that uses heckling as a theme. Based on a premis of Dan Blackwood it allows the performer to heckle his audience and for them to use a range of great 'heckler stoppers' Timothy |

Bought it and received it very quickly. Read it through in an afternoon. While the first section is a bit dry it contains a very useful digest of fundamentals and principles related to the psychology of heckling in general. For me, far more useful was the second section, a compendium of ideas and advice from a wide variety of working magicians and mentalists. And a great bibliography. Overall, a very worthwhile investment.

This book is now a year old
How useful is it? Are there clear guide-lines established? Does the advice work? Are all kinds of hecklers covered?
