Has anyone had any experience with this? Here is the advertised description:
Magic Squares! No – not the Mentalist version – the “artistic version!” Call it the perfect appetizer or twist to any close up performance. Add a story about “unity” either with a higher power of a significant other — and you have a tremendous emotional filler. Story line could elaborate on how in life we constantly get beat and cut up (as you cut the paper), but despite it all, through perseverance, while you remain an individual, you also are eternally linked to a special force in life – and you’re never alone! Or the effect could be performed simply as a visual illusion. Effect: Performer introduces a single sheet of paper that is check board with black and white squares. He displays the paper front and back to the audience who can be sitting very close. He then folds the paper in half and then in half again. and then takes a set of scissors and cuts it the very top triangular portion off. Then performs a series of cuts – after each cut he re-opens the fold to show the full pattern. The last cut is a cross cut and when the paper is opened what is revealed is two attached squares – naturally it being one piece of paper. What happens next – is amazing, the two squares are then independent of each other and are now linked! How is it possible to have two individual linked magic squares that came from one single piece of paper? Each unit comes with 10 gimmicks, allowing you for 10 performances. Once you have the item, you can most likely learn how to create more of them – provided you have the time in this crazy fast-paced life! A diagram is also included with each package. Important Note: We strongly recommend watching and referring back to the video as well features on this page. Also, when you get this item, make “copies” of the pages and “practice” the cutting patterns on the copies! Even though you will “not” get the desired effect, it will help you become familiar with the process! |

Being it is a new product and it is available free with $100 purchase from Stevens Magic if you get their email notices, I don't know why review would be needed when it have Van Dokkum name on it.
http://www.stevensmagic.com/shop/magic-squares-van-dokkum/ Watch video! I would say if you like puzzle like tricks, get it. Remember, refills will be needed. |

I'm not sure I'd call it a 'new' product. This has been published and I saw it in print some years ago (don't recall exactly where and when- at least 10 years ago, possibly 25-30)

"New" meaning offered as an individual trick on the market from Van Dokkum, being sold through Steven's Magic.
Most all magic is not new, they build on previous methods and knowledge. I don't get the what is so good about this cutting trick. I think (just my opinion) the Linking Playing Cards is a better choice then a tricky scissor cutting trick. |

Anyone who thinks that this is a strong magic effect is deluded. Not that I have an opinion.

But if nothing new is added to the effect or method (or possibly presentation) then I can just go through Tarbell and Greater Magic and put 10 "new" tricks a week on the market. There's thousands of tricks published that have never been on the market as an individual trick. I suppose there's a plus side, offering old tricks individually on the market does bring them to a whole generation (or 2) that don't read books. |

You can find tons of tricks being sold taken from books. Some not changed at all. In this case, I believe the "new" thing is the paper, it actually sounds like plastic he is cutting, not paper. I could be wrong, but it sure sounds like a plastic sheet when he folds and cuts it. That's all I have to say about the word "new" as it means to me, you have your definition and I have mine, which is okay with me, I don't want to "beat a dead horse", as they say. I think there is a reason Steven's is offering this for free, and your comments are in there someplace, I am sure. |
