Tenyo products continue to fascinate me. Their workings are so ingenious, and several of their principles seem like "naturals" for illusions.
I am wondering whether anyone has actually scaled up some of the Tenyo items to create stage-sized parlor or illusion props.
Things are more like they are today than they've ever been before...

Didn't Robert Harbin scale up their cigarette cutting effect? Sorry that I don't have a sensible answer, I'm curious myself.

This is a very interesting topic Clinton !
Let's say I've tried... In the year 2000 I bought their "Puzzling Queen" trick because just of reading the ad I thought this penetration effect could be a great illusion on stage. ...But I've failed. Maybe I didn't went until the limits of imagination to do so. Anyway I think, some of the Tenyo products are very inspiring to transcript in some way to a parlour or stage show. On the other way, I think that the trick inventors of the Tenyo products get their inspiration from parlour or stage, even illusion effects. So if something could be worked out in a larger scale I'm sure they would have thought about this already to bring out a new stage illusion. Oliver. |

Oliver, I would really have to sleep on it and see if it comes to me LOL. I would only be guessing now.
I remember Paul discussing it when he was speaking on creativity, ie. making things bigger, changing the shape of things to create a "new" effects. Although it might have even been Ali Bongo, who supplied many ideas for the shows Paul did, who mentioned it. Perhaps someone may remember the actual effect. Blair Marshall "ShaZzam!"

I have always thought that the small close up bit where you push a match or toothpick through a hole in a matchbox then pull out the drawer to show it has a solid piece of brass in it would upscale to a large stage illusion.
Also I think that some of the large "through glass" illusions work on the same principle as the small Tenyo one. |

Chad,
I remember Mark Wilson's illusion the Glass Penetration. What was first, this illusion or the pencil through glass? Santé, John |

Some Tenyo effects were "derived" from non-Tenyo items so the question might just be "Whether illusions or box tricks have been scaled either way".
Here are a few examples, although the various sizes may not work exactly the same. Reidel's Mandarin Dove Production & Crystal Casket. The Asrah & the small version with a Barbie Doll. Agga & Dove Suspension. Guillotine & Ed Masseys Finger Chopper (inspired from same) Sword Basket & House Of Enchantment's Box Of Baghdad. Don Redman's Doll House & Wonder Window (sort of) The "classic" Indian Rope Trick & Grant's Rope Of India Hole In One & that Tenyo Pyramid trick (although not an illusion) Temple Screens & Bryces Screens Dove Through Glass & several Alice (or other) people through glass (And silk through mirror) Minions, are made in different sizes Sub Trunk & Proxy Sub trunk Ba or M-R Box & Lion's bride This thought just materialised. Ever notice how a lot of Tenyo stuff is turned over but most illusions are not?

So the plastic magic kit trick was shrunk down, it seems more logical to me. Then there was the Dove Thru Glass. I would imagine Mark Wilson's was a combined effort, as Owen's makes or made the Girl Thru Glass. Here is a question for all you Grand Illusionist, as I don't know. Isn't huge illusions more of a "modern day" type of tricks. More 19th and 20th Century? Thoughts? |

Large scale stage illusion and even larger items that won't fit on a stage (outdoor illusions?) have been performed since the beginnings of magic. I know of one large illusion that dates back to at least the time of the pyramids and involves lighting a fire on a pedestal and saying some magic words and large wooden doors would open on their own granting entrance into a temple. The lighting of the fire started a chain reaction of events that heated air through pipes, causing hidden rollers to turn and open the doors. The incantation was just showmanship obviously. |

Scale down and scale up are both excellent ideas. Don't tell anyone about the idea of scaling up Tenyo. I'm using it. And I don't want anyone else to know, because it's such a good idea.
Shhhhhhhhh..... Don't tell the noobs! It'll be out secret! *buys all tenyo items*
