Hi,
I have been considering Doug Malloy's Lemon Game to add to my routine for adult and corporate events. I love the effect and think that it will work well for me. I started thinking about adding it to my kid's birthday show also. My plan would be to invite an adult up with some cash and do the routine in front of the kids. The more I watch the video on Doug's site, the more I think it will work well with some fine-tuning. What do you guys and gals think? Check out the video at http://www.malloymodernmagic.com/ Thanks, Keith

Sounds good to me.
You might use the $20 birthday bill from Grandma or get money from Dad. (Oh man, he lost Dad's money. He is in trouble now.) |

I very rarely use an adult only effect during a standard children's show. If there are mainly children there and a few adult watching, then I include the adults in 2 effects, along with children, using the interaction between the little kids and the 'big' kids. I also comment to the adults with references and jokes that go over the kid’s heads.
I have performed at birthday parties, where it is more of a family party, with either a 50/50 ratio of children to adults, or even less. Then I would use an adult only effect (obviously without any foul language or other 'adult' aspects. Just as a comment on Ralphdean's post. I would not use the birthday dad's money, since he can always come back with, “Well there goes your fee!!” That could be funny if you anticipated it, but it also puts you in a weak position. |

I know someone who does the Lemon Game in nearly every show he does, regardless of adult or kids. Granted, his presentation for kids is different than for an all-adult show. But he feels the effect is that strong that he uses it all the time!
I have seen his adult presentation, but not his kid’s presentation, so I cannot comment directly on how well it plays for kids. But as I said, he believes it plays well!

I think it could play, but if your doing it for kids, really change the patter around and dress the kids up and use lost of comedy byplay. As you all know, what works for adults does not always work for kids. Make sure your kid version is geared toward their level and likes.

Hi Keith:
I recently bought the Lemon Game from Doug Malloy and plan on doing it in all my shows, especially children’s' shows. When I purchased it from Doug, I asked him if it plays well for children. He said he does it in every kid show, including birthday parties; he says it kills every time. I haven't put it in the show yet, but it's such an excellent routine, I'm very confidant it will go well in kid shows. Ron |

I have done it but only when there has been a lot of adults. I have also done it for the older birthday shows, like 10 and up. But generally, no, I would not do it.
But it does KILL when there are adults there to do it. Ken |

Isn't there a knife involved? I would definitely be thinking about this when I planned my patter for children.

There is a knife to cut the lemon. But I don't see a problem with that with this routine. Kids see there parents use kitchen knifes all the time or when they go out to dinner they cut their food up.

I wouldn't do it. What are you going to do when the only adults are the birthday parents and they’re busy maybe getting the party bags ready for the end, and are not watching the show? Or in the kitchen chatting, the only adult there may be watching from the door, in the designated adult present mode and may not be interested in helping.
Also, to my mind, the children should be the stars at a birthday party not the adults.

I believe Doug does use a child helper; if an adult is present, he has the adult lend the child the bill and goes from there. If there's no adult to lend the bill, he uses his own bill.
Either way, I think it's fine because this is not a "destroyed bill" routine where the comedy is in destroying the helper's money. It's a game show theme where the helper chooses a prize or keeps the money in the little bag. Then, the signed bill ends up in the lemon. Ron |

Funny you should mention this. I purchased the Lemon Game when it first came out back in 1997. It performed ok for adult and kid shows (with some modifications.) After about a year and a half, I completely gave it up for, in my opinion, a much, much better and funnier routine (for my personality.) But I do credit Doug Malloy's Lemon game
for the inspiration to find my own routine that works for my personality. Probably the best 300.00 I ever spent even though I don't do the trick.

I have used it in birthday parties with great success. Like Ken, I only do it if there are enough adults to warrant doing it. I recommend changing the prizes on the cards to things that are hot for kids at the time. They can relate better to them this way. I also like the idea of dressing the kids up.
This plays very strong for kids and adults. It also is great to have an effect in your show in which you demonstrate some sort of "perceived skill" to the parents and older siblings. Not that just doing a GREAT kid show is not skillful. But as you know we are sometimes not given the credit we should be given. When you blow away the adults and older kids they always ask, "hey can you do a party for my wife’s 40th or I have the older kids come up and ask me if I can come to their party, which of course I can with a different show. |

Cabera,
What routine do you use instead of Malloy's Lemon Game? I'd be interested to know. |

Thanks everyone!
A fairly mixed response, which is very nice. I like hearing both sides of a story. I found a lot of great ideas here. I like the idea of changing the cards to fit a kids theme better. I also like the idea of having a kid come do the effect with a parent’s money. I can tell, you guys put a lot of thought into your show, which I appreciate. I guess if Doug Malloy uses it all the time, even for kids, I can too. I know where my next $325 is going. Thanks for the help! Keith

Nalu Magic,
The routine I perform for Bill to Lemon is proprietary to my act at this time. Magicians who have seen it here in Vancouver, Portland have said it is the best and funniest that they have seen. However, I'm beginning to find out that people like to "borrow" certain original lines etc. So I don’t perform it at any Magician's events or if I know that they'll be lurking around. But I can tell you that if you find a method to get a bill into a lemon, you don't need to send 325.00. Just perform it and perform it. (Do it in front of a video camera, then in shows, and the lines will come.)

You can also find a version of Bill to Lemon on Bill Malone's "On the Loose" DVD 2.
Any ideas on something besides a bill to put in the lemon for kid's shows? |

I've used the lemon game for every show that I have done for the past two years, both for children and adults. I always present my own bill to use. For adults I use an extra wallet to get the bill, as I have usually just done some watch steals and the pick-pocketing aspect goes over well. I always watch as the crowd checks their pockets, and I assure them that the wallet was from the last show. For kids, I present the bill to them as a gift and memento. By far this is one of my most requested bits. I tried to retire it for a while over the summer, especially for the kids. However, when I would get to a party, a parent would want to make sure that I was doing the "lemon trick" that they had seen at another event I had done. Overall, plays great for kids as well as adults.

I use bill in lemon in almost every show I do (with the exception of my anti-drug show). It's very effective with gospel magic, and I've used it at birthday parties as well.
I guess that birthday parties in the UK and here in the States are much different. I went back over all the birthday shows I've done in the past year and the notes that I've made on them.... not one had adults talking, making snacks, or doing anything other than enjoying the show. I'm sure that I've had birthday parties in the past where the adults thought I was nothing more than a baby sitter, but I honestly can't remember a specific show. Because of that, I do normal kids' routines, but include things that the adults will enjoy as well. Having said that, if I end up at a party and there are 30 kids and just four adults, I'll set the show to play accordingly. Hopefully, I've asked enough questions when booking the show to know what I can and can't use effectively, but just in case, I'm able to make changes upon arrival to do the best and most entertaining show that I can. Last week, while Christmas shopping, I had someone who I didn't recognize approach me in a parking lot and ask, "How the &@(*) did you get that twenty in that lemon?!?!" They had seen a kid's show more than a year ago. |

I love the Lemon Game. I get such great satisfaction in watching them examine the lemon after the show! I just laugh and laugh and laugh.
When performing it for family audiences, I often approach an adult before the show, and tell them I'm going to do a routine where I need to borrow some cash. I ask that if no one else volunteers the $$, that they raise their hand. I also don't use the adult on stage... I have a kid bring the money up, and the kid plays the "game show". Lots of fun, laughs, and great magic. I did Carl Cloutier's bill to kiwi for years, but like this much better.
