Hi Tom,
Thanks for taking the time to engage here. I'm curious about how you see life on the Street as a performer and a person. It's radically different from performing on more traditional "stages", with it's own etiquette and culture. How do you feel it has moulded your approach to performance, and life in general? If it isn't too presumptuous, what has the Street given you, and what have you given back? Thank you. |

Cellini used to tell me that Street Performing was the purest form of the art. There is you and the audience and if they don't like it they will leave. On the streets there are no rules. There is no stage, no mic, no lights, no audience. . . . until you build one. Everything is on the line. Show business is so unpredictable. Booking gigs ain't no cakewalk either. I like that's it me and my talent going out every night and coming home with the money that will pay all my bills. There is a purity to the lack of BS and bureaucracy. The buck stops with me. . . right in my hat!
What have I given back? My life and my knowledge. Just as I had strong mentors that shared with me, I have had my share of students who I hope I helped grow and learn as magicians and as people. |

Thank you, like it. As you said, it's all about creation. Building your stage, turning strangers into a cohesive group, sharing a series of moments. Allowing them to gratefully fill the hat.
All the best. |

Tom, what differences are there, if any, between working your usual gig, and working behind the bar at the Magic Castle? And when you get booked to work a corporate gig, do you do the street act, or something else?

Tom,
Following on what Curtis asked, I started busking and then started getting booked. I hadn't really planned on doing anything but my street show. When I got hired the first time I simply did my Street act without the hat lines. I figured why change what got you hired. So have you found your street act can work anywhere? And thanks for the cups! They don't look like the picture in my signature any more. Hundreds of shows later, they look like real Street cups. |

Curtis, Not much difference in what I do from venue to venue. My street act is the same as my Castle act, which is the same as my comedy club act or corporate act as well. I feel like I've a made a career on 6 tricks. Of course I have deep repertoire of B and C material. But the core act can be worked anywhere, anytime with little set up and very portable.
Shaun, Glad you like your cups and that you've beat some character into them! |
