If you're selling 10 items, it's ok to combine them into one post...you don't have to make 10 different posts and shove people off the first page of the thread. Just sayin'.

Ain't that the truth.
I've posted stuff and ten minutes later it's been moved to the second page.

Seems like a thoughtless and rather selfish practice.

I agree, but anytime this has been brought up on those "for sale" forums, the consensus seems to be that people prefer individual posts so they don't have to plow through a long list to see if there is something there of interest. Not me. I don't see it as time-saving anyway. You either read the list of items after one click, or read all the headlines of individual posts and click on each one that interests you. Duh...
I only see the long list format as problematic if the list is not maintained. I also think it better to update by re-posting the list (in the same thread, of course), but with sold items deleted from the list. Just listing what has been sold forces the reader (potential BUYER) to figure it all out by process of elimination. That's a dumb practice. Anyone who shops at Surplus Magic Exchange knows that is the accepted format. It also seems as if there are a few "professional" magic yard sale folks who seem to sell more magic than anyone. I find it hard to believe that they burn through that much material to then turn around and sell it at a loss. I bet the IRS loves these guys. About the only thing I find more irritating than that are the guys who sneak in a sales pitch plug with every post. Guerrilla Marketing via social media is one thing, but sometimes it comes close to spamming the forum with blatant, self-serving posts.

I posted a list of books recently and none sold. Which is the way I normally sell stuff. I posted two batches of books individually and sold three, possibly 4. Many people for what ever reason just don't pay attention to lists. I'm sure others have found the same. Hope that answers your complaint Lobo.

Yes, I used to hate that also, it meant that any post you made was pushed off the front page in a matter of minutes by a multi-poster. However, to be fair, people often want to know right away what's for sale when they're looking, so I guess I understand the reason for that. I must say, though, that because of that, I make more ridiculous bumps to my posts than I used to, in order to regain a reasonable page position.

Lots of people hog up all the space. There is a woman at my house who likes to curl up in a ball right in the middle of our queen size bed.

I don't believe lists are as effective as individual posts. If I'm looking for a specific title, I'm going to look in the subject line. Wading through every list to see if a book I'm looking for is listed or not seems like a waste of time. In my experience, people are looking for specific titles, in which case what does it matter if it gets moved off the front page. If I'm looking for a specific title, I'm going to scan all the subject lines looking for it.

For what it's worth, I don't look at generic lists either. I might click on a subject line like, "4 books by (author's name)" but never on one like, "Cleaning out the closet - great deals!"
If the title deosn't mention the product, I don't look. And when I'm looking for something specific, I too will go through the pages and check the titles. Bazinga! |
