So I'm hired to do a few Halloween parties and some of them have requested that I dress in costume. Rather than be dressed as the Magician; anyone have anything different that they do?
I’ve thought about a Pirate outfit but it’s not my thing, seeing as I have to perform I need to try and stay in character. I hate it when they throw a wrench in my well oiled running machine! Dressing up for Halloween does sound like fun though! Any thoughts or suggestions? What are you dressing up as this year?

How about dressing as a Pharaoh, and theming your show around Ancient Egypt? You'd have a pretty creepy repertoire of effects to choose from!

Now that idea is way out there... but my mind is racing with the many possibilities for mayhem!

I would go to the Dollar Store and get a bunch of different masks and use costume changes as a running gag throughout the show and have the point being that it is really you the whole time. After all, iif you do not use these opportunities to reaffirm in their mind about you, you have lost an opportunity. Whatever you do, you really need it to fit your show, otherwise you are better off not falling into the trap of the client taking over too much control over the content of your show.

Although it's a magical character, a wizard always works well as a costumed performer.

I'm doing a mad scientist character for one of my shows right now, and it fits well with my Halloween version of the act. The folks I've booked with on the Halloween shows like it because it has the potential to be a little spooky, but just as much funny and silly. Plus, the lab coat has tons of pockets for stuff. It's a good character with some flexibility.

I remember a client that wanted me to dress like SANTA!
I had to explain that SANTA is a BUSY ELF and doesn't have time to do shows--he just appears for a brief visit. SANTA is the CLIMAX of the party. If he is "Onn Tu Long (old Chinese billing)his presence ceases to be "special"! (old proverb: FAMILIARITY BREEDS CONTEMPT) Besides, working in SANTA wardrobe (beard, wig, etc.)would be extremely HOT and very uncomfortable. Years ago in Cleveland, the client had SANTA greeting the kids (and handing out candy and gifts) AS THEY ENTERED THE HALL. It was a disaster! The event was on a Saturday afternoon. The dads wanted to leave after Santa, so they could go home and watch the football game! We had a good show. CIMSE'S DOGS (veteran circus act) me, MC'ing and doing 20 minutes. But, the show went into the toilet. WORSE!--It was right in the "middle" of the IRAN HOSTAGE CRISIS (1980). The president of the group started the "festivities" by announcing the latest news of THAT DISASTER! Then he insisted that his "cute" little daughter (5 years old) would welcome the group and wish them Merry Christmas. The group was about 250 (adults and kids) and the auditorium had seating capacity of about 1500. The audience was scattered all over! I called my agent to tell him how horrible it was. He said, "Take the money, and run!" --I did!

Karrell Fox did kid parties as WOW the WIZARD.
He had a grey wig, a "wizard hat" and a "choir robe" or graduation gown (with stars, moons, and other symbols). He would exit his car put on the outfit and he was in character. The props were in a shoebox size case and nothing needed set up. He sat on a chair, opened the case, did 30 minutes, COLLECTED THE CASH, and left. Jay Marshall tried booking as the GREAT JASPER (he dressed as a railroad conductor) Like Karrell, he wanted to keep his club date image separate. Problem was that by the time he got the act "packaged", conductors were fading from the scene.

When dressing as a wizard or Santa, be weary of the beard. I use to wear a wizards beard and one day, inthe middle of the show the hair went down my throat and started choking me. I ducked behind my backdrop and yanked the hair out of my throat. It wasant pleasant. Realising that the audience was still watching, I came back out pretending I was being attacked by the hair and had a fight with it, ending with me standing on it. t turned into a comical piece which while entertaining, I will never ever do again. I no-longer wear any type of false beard for that reason.
If your on stage, you'll be talking a lot and your speed of delivery will be hightened. Its okay if your going to be sat down, talking slowly as your less likely to suck the hair into your mouth. But when on stage, things like that happen. |

That never happened to me, but I still standby my comments above.

I never received a request to dress as anybody on Halloween. But I was requested to dress as Santa a few times. I can take it.

You could throw a little irony into the show by coming dressed up as a rabbit. Just explain that the magician was sick today but the show must go on. So he asked you to step in... uhhh, I mean hop in!
And then early on, if you wanted to ditch the ears and tail, you could have the rabbit pull the magician (you) out of the hat. Now that would be a first! May sound crazy, but it sure beats dressing up like a spongeball! - Gary |

I also dress as a mad scientist for Halloween. I have a lab coat with my name embroidered above the pocket. I can add wig or wacky glasses if I choose to. Very easy.
I like the idea of dressing like Zucchini. He always looks comfortable! |
