Chris Angel took the magic out of magic... After seeing that he just took the art down a ton of notches .. He is a disgrace to the art in my opinion... Like 123 said isn't their enough good mentalism out there that they have to resort to this pure garbage ...

I saw this on my Facebook this morning and debated whether or not it was appropriate to copy and paste here. It seems to me that many are discussing Banachek and trying to decide what's appropriate for him to do with HIS career. He commented on the whole CA thing this morning, and, since he's not here to defend himself, I decided to post what he had to say on his behalf. I'm not stirring the pot. On the contrary...
His post follows: I have to say, that if you hear anyone saying we are using stooges and camera trickery and green screen on our new show Believe on Spike TV It simply means it was a magician who has NO IDEA how we accomplished what we accomplished and probably no idea how TV works and how to present magic on TV. I am very, very proud of our new series. And for those few who think Criss is claiming to be real, he recently offered an extra Million up against Randi's million to the Long Island Medium. Yeah, get tested and pass and you get two million. Doubt she will take it. Criss is an illusionist and is the first to tell you http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2hVxUPi_ulM

I've now watched 3 episodes of the new show and I haven't seen anything that fooled me and I am, by far, nowhere near as knowledgeable as many of the members here. (Most of the tricks are retreads of tricks already seen on "Mindfreak".) As to, "has... no idea...how to present magic on TV." I'll just say that this goes to the frequently debated topic here. That is, magic as performed by live magicians vs. magic created for television or movies. Obviously the effects on this show use rehearsed stooges, "found" props at pre-set "random" locations and advantageous camera angles and editing. Is this any different than live performers using stooges and clever staging? Well, that's where the argument begins. As I said before, none of the stuff about Angel's talent, ego or integrity really matters in terms of Banachek's career. He's getting his face on television and this will ultimately put more money in his bank account. It's show BUSINESS, so that is all that matters. |

The OP mentioned the legitimacy of "raising the dead". In the actual program which has now aired, there was no direct disclaimer. If you listen between the lines you could interpret that what is being done is a trick. But there was NO blatant disclaimer. It was left to the audience to figure out what happened.
I think the biggest problem is the use of an apparent cadaver on television. I am reasonably sure it was either an actor or it was a very well-done automaton. However, the use of a real medical doctor in the effect is highly questionable. I would love to know the real back story on that. The guy is a real medical doctor as far as I can tell. So he put his credentials as well as credibility on the line if all is as it seems. This is quite disturbing. Has Angel finally "crossed the line"? I don't think the answer is at all black and white. And I also find it intriguing that Banachek is prominent in this new program.

For all of the apologists using old cliches to justify the money grab... The glorification of money/ratings/fame only give you less access to art, by clogging the airwaves with contrived, uninspired crap that not only makes the great art go away, but it teaches the next crop of upcoming magicians and mentalists that these methods are not only viable, but even preferable. Great art in magic and Mentalism occurs only when the method is as compelling as the jaw dropping effect. When one receives the secret, it inspires more than it disappoints.

I've known for years Copperfield has used stooges and am Happy that I can say I saw him LIVE twice. To me that is different as it's expected, like in Escapology too. I know I probably sound like I'm contradicting myself and I don't mean too, but to me I believe 100% you should not use Stooges, Instant or Otherwise, Plants, Hidden Pre-Show and if on T.V. editing, or Camera tricks. You see what Copperfield does he MUST do in order for certain Illusions to work. Otherwise there are different and BETTER methods for the rest. God Bless, Ed ...
