I quote the Society of American Magicians:
"The National Council of the Society of American Magicians has determined that various chat rooms and social media have been improperly utilized as outlets for cyber bullying which targets magic, magicians and young people who are interested in magic. Various magic forums serve a good purpose in sharing ideas and thoughts which help to improve the skills of the performer, some web sites either allow, tolerate or permit performers to be the victims of absurd, hateful and hurtful attacks against a fellow performer The National Council of the Society of American Magicians hereby adopted the following resolution condemning Cyber Bullying: The Society of American magicians opposes and condemns Cyber Bullying in any and all forms including but not limited to all forms of hate speech, the use of words which attack physical appearance, gender, religious belief, sexual orientation or nationality and opposes all kinds of needless and hateful cyber bullying resulting from the publishing of private information on magic related web sites. Adopted: November 9, 2013" I believe we owe it to our youth and to anyone being bullied or intimidated to take a similar stand. Ray

It needs to be more defined. It is wide open to interpretaion on many of the terms they use.

Well Danny, it may be wide open to interpretation. The bottom line; Bullying is wrong no matter what it looks like. Maybe we could take the lead and develop a more defined definition.

We could start by the actual definition of bullying. I say that because the word bullying has been given a lot of new meanings depending on who you talk to. Name calling is not actually bullying. For example; if I called someone stupid, or fat, that's not bullying. Some think it is, or should be.
I am currently involved with a anti-bullying committee, and most ant-bullying programs have taken a very sharp left turn. We have 2 physiologist who work with us who both state that bullying does not cause suicide either. There are several other factors being ignored that a young person who commits suicide had. No one addressing the real issues, or looking at trying to understand why some become effected by bullying, and why many others are not. Most just want to punish the bully, but only a few of us are addressing why bullies bully. When it comes to our children even bullies are victims. Whenever I hear that bullying is a complex issue, I can't understand why so many are looking for easy solutions and harsh punishments instead of looking to the root of the problem. Well I have a good reason why, but when explained by a psychologist it makes more sense.

Wikipedia describes bullying:
g is the use of force, threat, or coercion to abuse, intimidate, or aggressively to impose domination over others. The behavior is often repeated and habitual. One essential prerequisite is the perception, by the bully or by others, of an imbalance of social or physical power. Behaviors used to assert such domination can include verbal harassment or threat, physical assault or coercion, and such acts may be directed repeatedly towards particular targets. Justifications and rationalizations for such behavior sometimes include differences of class, race, religion, gender, sexuality, appearance, behavior, strength, size or ability.[2][3] If bullying is done by a group, it is called mobbing.[4] "Targets" of bullying are also sometimes referred to as "victims" of bullying. Bullying can be defined in many different ways. The UK currently has no legal definition of bullying,[5] while some U.S. states have laws against it.[6] Bullying consists of four basic types of abuse – emotional (sometimes called relational), verbal, physical, and cyber.[7] It typically involves subtle methods of coercion such as intimidation. Bullying ranges from simple one-on-one bullying to more complex bullying in which the bully may have one or more "lieutenants" who may seem to be willing to assist the primary bully in his or her bullying activities. Bullying in school and the workplace is also referred to as peer abuse.[8] Robert W. Fuller has analyzed bullying in the context of rankism. A bullying culture can develop in any context in which human beings interact with each other. This includes school, family, the workplace, home, and neighborhoods. In a 2012 study of male adolescent football players, "the strongest predictor was the perception of whether the most influential male in a player's life would approve of the bullying behavior". You are completely right when you state that bullying does not cause suicide. Bullying may be a contributing factor. I work in the stressful environment of drug and alcohol addiction. I have seen clients take on a 'pack' mentality to intimidate certain individuals they perceive as weak. As a result, some of them have left the program, gone back to the addictive lifestyle and eventually died. I believe each and every one of us should be aware of our words and actions to ensure that first of all, we harm no one. Ray

All very true.
We are looking at root causes of why children bully. These are some the more serious reasons, but not limited to and not always the case. Aggressive behavior in a child can be one of the most obvious signs that the child is experiencing a type of abuse in the home. Usually the way a child bullies relates to the type of abuse they face regularly. Humiliating or shaming other children to look good can indicate they are feeling inferior at home. Physical bullying is brought on by the helplessness they hate feeling when facing physical abuse themselves. mutilation of their own possessions or other children's possessions can be a sign of sexual abuse. Stealing others' possessions can be signs the child faces neglect. While the abuse doesn't always have to originate from the parents, over 80 per cent of abused children are abused by a relative or close family friend. Where I believe the system is failing is rather than just looking at the bully's behavior, we should also be looking at why they are that way. The home should always be at least the first place to look. Here are some recognized symptoms ( in no particular order) found in children who commit suicide: depression, anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder, eating disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, (PTSD)and substance abuse. There is much more than what I have written, but these are the most common we have discovered through our research so far. There are very visible signs for these symptoms. One of the reasons ( but not limited to) that a child becomes a victim is depression with low self esteem. Parents and family members of children who commit suicide sometimes go into denial, they want someone to blame other than themselves.(Not saying they are to blame, but most children who are raised in a healthy, loving, supportive environment don't tend to turn to suicide. I say "environment" because I mean their social surroundings as well. These are just some of the things we are discussing because we are not seeing many people who are addressing these issues. Cyber bullying is something we haven't discussed much but we will be in the near future. One of the questions that has come up in regards to cyber bulling is why children's time on the computer is not being monitored enough. I know I am constantly monitoring my 7 year olds time on the computer. I make sure I know what he is watching, and what he is listening to. There is still so much more to discuss and research, yet, some anti-bullying groups, parents and government officials are being quick to push for more harsher punishment on the bully's. That is not the answer to the problem. It's more complex than that.

Hi Danny.
I am definitely not advocating harsher punishment for the bully. Your recent post shows me you have a deep understanding of the subject. What I am advocating is making people aware of what bullying actually looks like and what can be done to prevent it. Cyber Bullying becomes even more complex. We have had loss of life in Canada in recent times as a result of Cyber Bullying. An offshoot of that phenomenon is 'sexting'. Many young females are now 'flashing' their boyfriends. These males then place the photos on the Internet and YouTube. I am definitely enjoying our discussions on this subject. What area of Canada do you live in? PM me if you don't want to go public. Ray
