I am joining my local IBM, Ring 9. I may have to perform tonight. Nothing makes me more nervous than doing tricks for a bunch of Magicians. What should I do? I have no idea what I will perform. I know it doesn't really matter but it does matter to me. Suggestions? I have a pretty broad range, just want your thoughts.

I sort of want to do my Street Cups and Balls with hat load. I am pretty sure I will do a trick that I do in my street show it's just that I am torn between Cups and Balls and my rope routine.

Go with the cups, so few indoor magicians actually do it. I truly hate performing for magicians, just do it as if they were real people, ignore the blank stares and don't leave any laugh gaps for tumbleweeds to pass through as they analyse your moves without blinking or showing signs of life

Milt Kort had a lovely piece of magic for occasions like this.
It is a Cards to Pocket (4 Aces) in which the 4 Aces, one signed, travel to different pockets under impossible condition. The trick requires blatant audicity, but usually blows magicians away while somewhat obvious to laymen. Milt used it on magicians and I've had a good deal of fun with it also on magicians It's in his book 'The magic of Milt Kort' |

Funny Devious, I just bought a Ring Flight Revolution from a member here at the Café, it will be here this week. I have also been practicing my Salt Pour. Who better to try a new routine on than the local magic club? They aren't tipping or paying for a show, it's genius I tell you!

Do somthing you do well and you know hit a lay audience well. Magicians can be a bit non-responsive as a audiance. So you can gain confidence knowing that usall get wow or a laugh. I saw some audition with there rope routine they used on the street. And he did it as he would on the street. Rather than doing it on the stage he did it out side on the stair well. He also did it like he had a imagine crowd. And fire line out to no one.
But look you been beating the street for a while you know what you know your be fine
Enjoy your magic,
and let others enjoy it as well! |

I know it isn't as important as some of the other performances I have done and will do it's just that judgement of your peers is always tough. I don't normally hang with Magi in Real Life, just here on the Café...
Yes, Devious, head over to the Metalism section and dominate everyone there with your new found mind powers. Make them all dress in Steampunk and give out your business cards at their shows! |

My friend Charlie Caper told me a great thing this summer. He said that when you are about to choose what tricks to perform on the streets - you should not think so much about what trick you want to perform today, but what trick you want to perform in ten years. Because the tricks you start out with is usually the same trick that your career will be built around. And if you turn out to become a big name it will also be the trick you will be renown for. Think about that for a while - and do consider the classics and what they will do for you and what you will do for them.
I strongly believe that you can take any trick and make it into something awesome. It is a question of time and effort. I think we all have tricks that we have been doing for years and years. The routine we do today is great, the one we did ten years ago - not so much. So if you are thinking about going out on the streets and really work it. You will get SO many more hours in just a month than most magicians get, so whatever you touch will eventually turn into a gem. If this in someway sounds condescending - it is not my intention. Perhaps you have a great repertoire and this tip is way of. But I mean it in a nice way. Best, /Ark

Hey Shaun--Do your cups. I know how dedicated you've been in perfecting your routine, and I've seen bits of it online. You'll kill.
But, as others have said, be ready for the WORST AUDIENCE of your life. I love my IBM brothers, but they talk through everyone's performance, openly announce what is being done, even sometimes repeat the moves for each other while the magician is still performing. I've never known them to be malicious or unkind afterwards, in fact they are quite generous with applause and praise, but DURING the performance, they are everything you could hope an audience won't be. You'll be Gr8, Gorilla! |

Hey look, I got a new name! I suppose it will be December before I will perform. I have been working on one small change to my Cups routine and that is how I do the vanishes. It is the hardest thing I have ever done, changing this. Right now, if I don't think about it I do it the old way. In my street routine I used a french drop to vanish the balls because it is easy, angle proof, looks O.K. etc. I have been studying Tom Stone's work a lot lately and his crossing the gaze for the vanishes and that is how I am practicing doing them now. It is so hard to break my old habits though. Otherwise I have a good 3 phase routine.
1)I vanish 3 balls and they appear under the cups. 2)I then remove the two end balls which then come back of their own accord. and all 3 balls assemble under the center cup. 3)I push the cups aside, do the "how many balls are under the hat." This leads into the reveal of the final loads. It is basically the Vernon or Gazzo routine without the 2-0-2 sequence or the balls passing through the cups and down to the table. The entire routine with audience interaction is about 7 minutes long. I also don't do the explanation with the bad french drop to load the cups. I consider those the major differneces from the Vernon/Gazzo routine. I suppose it is finally my routine as it is different enough in patter, tempo, etc to appear different to other magicians anyway. Most laymen probably wouldn't get the differences. So, the cups it is! It is my favorite trick. Especially since I don't do a super long routine and drag it out forever! I'll get a new video of it up soon. |

The most touching version of the cups and balls that I have ever seen
is David Regal's. His final load is a set of colored plastic cups as he relates a story of his youth and his first set of cups. It's on one of his dvds, but to listen to the performance in person exceeds it by far. Rarely do magicians at Ring meetings perform the cups. You should do well Shaun, enjoy the applause and feedback. Just don't ask, "How did I do?" instead, "I hope you enjoyed!" |

Most magicians in most magic clubs really aren't very entertaining. . . at all. So give them something they've never seen before. Do the routines, no matter how simple, that you feel are your most entertaining to watch.
