I have been practising the basics in card magic. Here is an idea I came up with as my first trick. I tell my spectators I want to try something with them. I take the cards do a quick shuffle and spread them out a bit face down from the left hand to the right, as I am spreading I ask a spectator to ask me to stop at any time. The spectator says "stop" so I stop", I tell them to take the top card on the top of the remaining portion of the deck in my left hand, I tell them this is there card , look at it and show it to everyone else but don't show it to me, they do that. I then tell the spectator to replace the card back onto the top portion of the deck in the left hand, I close up the deck, as I am doing this I talk about "If this works I will look like a freakin' genious...but if it doesn't, oh well I carry a lighter in my pocket to burn these cards so I never have to do this trick again", I say this jokingly. I do a quick shuffle of the cards. I then do a cut of the cards. I then ask "Are you ready", I also say "I will not look at the card as I show it to them". I now turn over the top card and show it to the spectators, of course it is not there card and they all think I have blown the trick, they tell me that was not the chosen card. I turn the card back over face down on top of the deck, never having looked at it my self. I then go into a slight argument or disagreeement and I say "I know that had to be their card" as I then lay the top card face down on a table right in fron of them. The spectators assure me again that it was not the chosen and reaches out and turns over the card on the table only to realize IT IS IN FACT their chosen card. Everyone has a big smile on their faces and are amazed and I look like a "freakin' genious"!
So what do you all think about this, how does the presentation sound, please tell me your thoughts? |

I hope you are speaking tongue in cheek when you say this routine will make you look like a "freakin' genious". First, because you spelled genius wrong. Not something a freakin' genius should do
Second, most magicians find it works best to focus on entertaining your audience and if you have an air of superiority you will turn off a lot of people. THere are a number of routines that hinge off the basic sequence you have outlined. Here is the kind of thinking you need to do to make it better. How can you reveal the card on the table is the chosen card in a better and more entertaining way then just turning it over and laying claim to your genius? Here is just one example. I like the lighter idea. Why don't you say you will burn the card (not the deck) if you can't get it right. Then lay the card on the table with the intention of burning it. Get your lighter out. Pick up the card with the face to you. I would consider having forced the card and have your lighter have the chosen card as a graphic on it. Pull out the lighter hiding the graphic and maybe even run the flame under or near the card -- then say -- wait a minute -- what was your card? as you reveal the graphic on the lighter. Then for the kicker -- turn around the card as you say -- I think the heat from the lighter did something to this card.... |

Adding on to TheRaven's suggestion : Flash playing card might play well here too.
