From time to time I read a comment that contains a negative regard for stacking sequences. As a newbie to cups and balls, I'd appreciate one of the vets explaining why stacking is held in lower esteem. Is it that stacking is the first, so it doesn't offer surprises to those who have seen C&B routines before? Or are there other considerations behind the negative attitude?
Thanks for any coaching on this point. |

I'm not certain that stacking of the cups in a cups and balls routine is as frowned upon as you seem to think. In fact most fellow magicians to want enough attic space to allow for stacking. Are there C&B routines as well as the cups themselves that aren't designed to be stacked? Yes. One such routine that doesn't require any stacking is the Charlie Miller Impromptu Cup and ball routine which can be found in Bruce Elliot's book, Classic Secrets Of Magic. Most of the routines that you may see do stack the cups. One in particular is the Dai Vernon Routine.

Every magician I've seen has used stacking at least once in the routine. The thing is that stacking is the "instruction manual in the magic kit" trick. The secret is basically out.
That being said! I've seen the laiety AS WELL AS MAGICIANS fooled by modifying the cup stack. Garcia had some very interesting moves (cough cough) and if you are using a combo set then you can do a great deal with the stack. I think the reason a lot of magicians choose to not do the stack is that it's the same thing THREE TIMES IN A ROW. "Once is a trick, twice is a lesson, three times is a bore"- but that can be avoided by changing methods on each stage of the stack, IMHO. |

Thanks for the enlightenment, RS and Nate. I'm practicing my first real routine and your thoughts are a great help.

Then talk about "a lot of of magicians choose not to do the stack" By, The Stack are you guys talking about the sequence that came on the S.S. Adams instructions; making the three balls pass through a cup one at a time? Or any process by which cups are stacked? The routine I do does not use the sequence in the S.S. Adams instructions. At one point I put one cup on top of another cup. It is for a three-ball-reveal. Does that constitute stacking? |

Thanks for responding, Kent. Always value your posts. In my initial post, I just used the general term, which I guess I understood to be the three cups piled and some form of producing the balls one by one under the cups until they all sat there together.
I'm happy to hear that I understood wrongly about how folks feel about stacking. I like the vertical arrangement mid-way through the routine as a change from the horizontal display. And your 3-ball production at the conclusion of your 1963 routine is a great capper to a terrific routine. |

I do not do it in my routine at all. I wanted to devise a routine that didn't require it just in case I used impromptu cups.
It turns out that I liked the routine that way, and didn't feel the routine was missing anything as a result, so I kept it that way.
