I signed up for the course and I completed the first module in a day. Julian Mather is a great instructor and I think this course would be perfect for someone starting out in magic. He teaches by showing clips of his shows for different age groups. Julian also goes into great detail on how to perform lots of magic. Without giving too much away he helps you decide what to put into a show, dealing with the audience, prep before the show, how to review your show and improve it, and lots of other tips.

Yes, I also took the plunge. I haven't found anything new but that isn't to say that someone who is looking to get into children magic won't benefit some way from his courses. I think he overhypes his mouthcoil routine too much, especially when it's nothing but the basic routine. His puppet routine with the monkey relies, in part to Bill Abbott's Chico routine.
I don't see much here for anyone who has already been performing children magic, that is, unless you are terrible and looking to start from scratch. if you are a beginner, or thinking about getting into this line of work, this might be good for you. Or you could spend less on better material from more seasoned pro's. I will admit, Julian does a great job presenting the material, but I think it's way over priced for what it is. Just my personal opinion.

Danny,
I don't agree with everything he teaches or routines he uses. One example is I use a live bunny at the end of my deluxe show and I don't see myself taking this out. Julian uses a drawer box pig and he believes this can replace a live bunny. Julian is very likeable and I think the price for his course is reasonable. I have gone to magic conventions and paid more and received less information for a magicians program. I am looking forward to module three where he will go into his organizational skills, and I would like to become better organized. Mike |

I think it's unfair of me to give a full review just yet because I haven't gone through all the modules. Consider my current review based on just the first two. I do think Julian is a great speaker, and does comes across as a very likeable person.

Danny, I agree a live bunny is a great pull and whilst I agree many effects can be as strong I have never found one that has the same pull when selling the show on the phone .

For me this is a good course. The price is not cheap but I am glad I took the plunge. I did some children shows about 10 years ago as an amateur magician, but now I am going a semi-pro magician. The information of this course is helping me to put everything together even if I wont do most of the tricks that Julian does. I believe this course is not for a complete beginner but more for someone who wants to put together a professional magic children show.

I have taken the course. I feel that it is well worth the money.
My background is that I had a life-long interest in magic, but never actually performed other than for friends and family. I decided to get serious about it and see if I could start making money actually doing shows. I bought quite a number of books and DVDs, and joined my local clubs (a SAM and and IBM). While I learned a lot of tricks, I didn't feel like I was really getting much help in actually creating a show. I felt like I had a bunch of tricks, and could keep people entertained, but that it was more just showing a bunch of tricks. I feel that I have gotten out of this course what I was hoping / expecting to get out of a lot of the other materials and didn't. I was familiar with Julian from his YouTube channel, and liked the way he taught, so decided it was worth taking a chance. I also appreciate his attitude that it is in the best interest of all magicians if we as a whole put on better shows. Some treat things as closely guarded secrets, whereas his attitude is that if we all did great shows, there would be more work for all of us. I agree, but realize that is not the accepted way of things. Keep the secrets, make others pay the same dues you had to pay before they find anything out. Meanwhile, if everyone did better shows, people wouldn't think about whether or not to hire a magician, it would be on their must have list. Instead, there are a few that do great shows, and a lot that do mediocre / poor shows, and magicians are on the, "Do we want to try - we had one last year and they weren't very good" list. I also appreciate that he doesn't try to say that there is only one way to do something, or that you have to do things exactly as he says. One of his catch phrases is, "Be your own authority." If other magicians (especially non-working ones) are telling you that something is not good, and you find that it works for you, USE IT! If you already have a great magic show that you are perfectly happy with, maybe it's not for you, although there are some long time performers who feel that they have gotten value from the course. If you know why you have certain tricks in certain places in your show, and don't need any help with coming up with a structure that can be applied to any show, maybe it's not for you. I know there are some people that are like this. From having gone and watched a lot of local magic shows once I started getting serious about this, I also feel that there are a lot of magicians, even ones currently doing shows, that could benefit from this. Again, just my opinion. But, you get free videos, and a 60 day money back guarantee, so the only real risk is your time. Also, I feel that both Julian, and the group which has come together on Facebook, have been very helpful and supportive. I'm fairly active there, but in case anyone sees this and think I am associated with Julian, I am not. I'm just a fan who is trying to help out others that want to put together a great show. |

I cancelled after two installments. Julian comes across as a very likeable person but nothing he teaches is new. At times I felt the info Julian was teaching was something he just learned himself. The course teaches you nothing more than what can already learn from Danny Orlean, Bill Abbott, Silly Billy, for a fraction of the price of this course.
I also didn't find Julian's performance style appealing. The two big routines that Julian talks about with high praise is his mouthcoil routine, (which is nothing more that the basic effect. No imagination from Julian in his basic mouthcoil routine. Then there is his monkey routine which uses all the gags from Chico The Amazing Monkey, (Bill Abbott). The routine falls flat compared to the original Chico routine. After watching 3 sessions I knew I had to cancel my membership. I just wasn't learning anything I didn't already learn from either Christopher T. Magician, Silly Billy, or Dan Orleans. Very expensive course that I personally feels fails to present top notch quality material and info.

Danny,
No argument that the people you mention are all great entertainers, and have great learning materials out there. I own numerous materials from all of them. Maybe it's just personal preference, or maybe I was just at the right time in my learning / practicing and whatever was in Julian's course just made it happen for me. You seem to be in the category that I mentioned in my last post of people for which this might not be a good fit - someone that already has a show with which they are happy. The call to action, and seeing others in the group actually taking the steps and performing might have been what did it. I'm not sure, and would never try to say that this is for everyone. All I can say is that I feel that it helped me, and I feel it could help others. |

Thought I'd bring this little topic back to the top. I had an interesting little experience on Friday afternoon at a shopping mall near my house, that was sort of related to this topic.
I was buying something at a shop and there was a family from Malaysia sitting nearby at a table. The young guy who was about 12 was sitting there with a deck of bicycle cards. I went over and in a friendly tone, asked him to show me a magic trick. He was quite excited and asked me to pick a card and look at it and then asked to see it. He then pulled another deck out of his pocket and used the ID to reproduce my card. I reacted in the appropriate manner that I thought I should to give him some encouragement. I then asked if I could borrow his deck and tried to do a couple of things with his older brother. Here comes the funny part. Every time I did a MOVE he tried to jump out of his chair and grab the cards back and try to tell me and everyone who was there what I was doing. I basically didn't really worry too much about it, as it wasn't my place to try and teach him things. He was saying "I'm a magician, you can't fool me"! He then asked if there were any places where he could be some new bicycle decks in town. He asked if Julian sold them. I asked him, "Is that the man who has the youtube channel for magic tricks"? He said yes. I didn't say anything, except Julian doesn't live in this city. As he parted I leaned in and said "Your ID routine was OK, and keep it up". His eyes nearly popped out of head. I whispered, "I'm a magician as well". I seem to have these experiences with these young Youtube kids magicians, which is why I'm not keen to support folks like Julian and his course. I'm keen to help these young guys, but man,,some of the ways they are taught the ropes of performing leaves a lot to be desired. Al
