I was thinking that there is a lot of great magic that is not specifically intended as kids magic. Thought maybe we could share some ideas. I'll throw out one. "Torn and restored newspaper" I find makes a great kids routine, although preparation time can be a problem, but the "no tear torn and restored" fixes that problem - its not as good but for repeating performances for kids is a great option. Other ideas???

I know what you are thinking. Others think the same way temporarily. I use to think the same you in the past. The secret is how it is performed. Magicians like The Great Zucchini will know how to manipulate effects like for the kids.
There are a lot of Torn and Restored newspaper effects. Some can be reset within 10 seconds. |

If you like storytelling magic, Dan Harlan's Starcle plays well for kids and adults ... and there's no resetting needed!

I get great reactions from Suck Silk to Egg, $100 Bill Switch, and Sugar High (just to name a few), but Mike is right. It's what you do with the tricks - how you present them and entertain with them - that makes them work for kids. Also, most any trick generally thought of for adult audiences can be turned into a great kid show routine AS LONG AS the basic effect is pretty straightforward. Torn & Restored Newspaper is a great example, kids can follow the basic plot - it's torn to pieces than put back together by magic. A trick with too many steps and phases might get lost on a young audience.

The Mindreading Orange. I use it in some of my children shows. I refer to it as the Annoying Oranges cousin, throw in some of the original play on words, plus some that references the show that the children understand.
Keep your dreams alive. Understand to achieve anything requires faith and belief in yourself, vision, hard work, determination, and dedication. Remember all things are possible for those who believe.

For me six card repeat followed by cards across plays as strongly for five year olds, fifteen year olds and fifty five year olds. Just did it at a golf club dinner tonight, and a kids show this afternoon, and it brought down the house in both cases.
Other routines, such as balloon swallow, need an adjustment in patter. With the cards across, not necessary.

Most tricks normally associated with stand-up adult shows can be presented to children with the right presentation. It's also easier to develop your own bits of business and gags and you have the confidence of knowing that others in your area are not doing the same tricks. In any of my shows you are likely to see a selection of Coins In Glass, Clickety Click, Orrin's Uplift, Links To Chain, Silken Saga, Ghost Tube, Coins Across, Block Penetration, Colour Changing Records etc.
Shows with strong magic elevate you in the eyes of your clients as they appreciate the magic, especially if they have seen your competition with a run of the mill show. |

Bill to Lemon, Cards Across, Miser's Dream, Gumball Machine trick and just about any silk effect work for kids.

I use a giant B'Wave in most birthday parties. A bit older and I'll use Twisted Sisters.
Then again, what age are "kids" to you? 5? 8? 11? Ed |
