If you have some distance with yourself and a bit of humor, you could structure the story around a university which asked the students to keep all their notes aside for an exam, but that thanks to magic some manage to get some top grades as "a token of the professor's appreciation" in human sciences, then in philosophy, then in physics, economy...
Magic is the art of emotionally sharing live impossible situations

Since they were dependent on the notes in the first place, it stands to reason they wouldn't necessarily recognize something was out of order. Maybe it's a new trick they just got and they're eager to try out and haven't even practiced, but the box said "self working".... But these steps aren't quite like lecture notes - they're guided steps for someone who can't remember (or never knew) the right order. OR Skip dropping the cards, but have their backs clearly numbered "Step 1", "Step 4", "Step 9", but again, the performer is too nervous/oblivious to notice (but it's made abundantly clear to the audience). Or maybe it's a timing thing... the cards are in the right order, but the notes are poorly written (similar to your example). The performer carries out each action one at a time with each card read.... Card 1: Show two coins Card 2: Place silver coin in pocket Card 3: Open hand to show you still have two coins. (performer is as surprised as everyone else) Card 4: ...but first, secretly retrieve the silver coin from your pocket (performer does double take from hand with silver coin already there and his pocket -- Maybe even pull the pocket out and show it empty (method left to the reader). Etc. Obviously it needs work, but I think there's a script that can be made. |

I do it like teaching how coins re appear, with a do as I do pattern, similar in idea to what Whit Haydn does with linking rings, also because the coins are not so commons it allows me to give each person the penny and the kennedy half, and I ended with the gimmicked set. After that is the regular pattern.
My point is that I am not good at teaching, not their fault, this is what at the end All my coins vanish rather than re appear and I have not clue why and move to a cards trick. I do tricks for my family and friends so it is a limited audience, not sure if it could work on a commercial environment |
