All silks should be clean and pressed for each performance!
My sources from beyond say............. Even the amateur magician should adopt a professional approach when offering their magic |

Small silks that get squished into fekes like TTs or gimmicks like dye t**b*s, can be "freshened" by the old trouper's technique--
Soak them in clean water (separately, 'cuz not all silks are colorfast)and spread them on the wall of the shower in the motel (or any smooth surface like a mirror or window). When they dry (it wont take long) they will fall off and look pretty good. Large picture silks: --some of the newer ones are color fast (check with the maker)but MANY ARE NOT. To keep them presentable, I always "stacked" them. I laid one on a table and then placed the second on top etc. I crumpled some dry cleaner plastic bags into a big soft ball and placed it in the center of the top most silk. Reaching under the stack, I grabbed the plastic "ball" through the silks, and picked up the whole stack, and turned it upside down (looked like a "comet") I had a shoe box in the (Merv Taylor TAMBOR) case. The silks were never crushed in transit, About once per season, I dragged out the iron and spent an hour with Harold Rice's "children"!

I wrap mine around a piece of PVC pipe, it keeps them looking good and fresh. Stack one upon another then put the PVC on one end and roll. This is one of the tips I picked up from a Barry Mitchell lecture. I also use a different length PVC for different sized silks. 9", 18", 36" and picture silks get their own PVC pipe.

Excellent advice all around. Crinkled, creased, and crumpled is NOT a good look!

Which is where I obtained the handkerchief in my mediaeval colour changing handkerchief routine. Besides if you use a freshly pressed and non-crinkled handkerchief to start it looks suspicious if the different coloured silk comes out in a far less than perfectly pressed condition.

Many tiny crinkles can look better than pressed silks.
If you press them any that were packed will tell the tail. I do occasionally press silks but not for everything. -Mary Mowder |

Rolling the silks (PVC pipe) helps (in the old days we used cardboard mailing tubes) but my little props case (13" x 20" x 8" didn't have room for all that tubing!
I only use ONE effect that has an 18" stuffed into a dye t**e, It is loaded at the LAST MINUTE, and comes out looking good. At the end of the routine, the "g" is empty, so the second silk is only in it for a minute. It's my opening bit. The other silk routine is 20C and is next to closing. I use two "polya" (20" x 20") for the knotted togethers and two 18" Rice Rainbows. The polys are never "crunched" and the rainbows ditto. When I use the Merv Taylor Tambourine ("big" shows)or the Phantom Tube(s) (simplified Ade Duval) the silks are packed as noted above. They always look nice. One of the important things is: LOAD AT LAST MINUTE!!!
