Hello,
As I stated in my post introducing myself I am getting back into magic. It is a hobby of mine, but I intend on building up to performing for weddings, corporate parties and things of that nature. I have already started rereading some of my books that I purchased when I was in high school. No, this is not the first time performing magic just relearning everything that I forgot. lol Anyway, I lack much material for the venues I am looking to perform for (weddings, corporate events). I was hoping for some information as to where to begin looking so I may learn and start putting an act together. Also, I need a one liner book if anyone has one that they personally enjoy. Just so everyone understands I am not looking for kids birthday party material. I always enjoyed performing for adults because of my personality, I like to joke around on an adult level if you will. lol |

First of all, what type of a performer are you? What is your character? What type of magic do you prefer?

What Bulla said is definitely some info that we'll need if we're really going to help you out. I'm not sure what books you have but some I would make sure that you have in which in my opinion are a must for magicians are Tarbell's Complete Course in Magic, Card College, and J.B Bobo's Modern Coin Magic. I do a lot of close-up though and that's what my favorite things are. In my opinion, I think every magician should touch on cards and coins no matter what your goal is. As people recognize you as a magician, you will have people asking you to show them a trick non stop and I think it's important to be able to pick anything in a room up and put them in awe. That is what a good magician is in my mind. Good luck and once you say more about what you're wanting to do, I'll answer more to the best of my ability.

Right, Zaphury - stay away from ANY Harry Lorayne book. Great, knowledgeable, advice. HL.

I own Bobo's Coin Magic, Card College, I do not have Tarbell's Complete Course in Magic. I will need to check It out. Personally, I like mentalism. I have a few things from Luke Jermay, Universal impression 2.0 (Psypher), Paralies By Joshua Quinn, Spun By Morgan Strebler, TKO 2.0 (Which I love by the way lol). I was thinking about getting some of Bill Abbotts material. I saw him in person and really enjoyed what he had to offer. I like to be funny and have a great time with magic. When things get to serious and the audience it not laughing, I feel like I am failing as a performer.

Chuck Hickok's Mentalism Incorporated is a great book on doing mentalism for corporate crowds.

If you don't already have them "Audience Management" by Gay Ljungberg and "Scripting Magic" by Pete McCabe are worth having.
You might also want to check out books by Karrell Fox, which have a variety of magic including corporate and material that could be used for weddings.

I had heard only good things here about it, but wanted to check for myself, as I did with Mark Wilson and Joshua Jay(I bought the former, but not the latter, yet. I'm going to get that one to share with my daughter.). I checked The Amateur Magician out of my library about 10 days ago, but within the first hour or so of reading, it shot to the top of my list of books to get after Christmas, assuming (rightly I imagine) a limited budget.

As far as I can tell, it's still in print and should be easy to find at cover price or less. Long story short, I think it's a worthwhile purchase, and it will sit on my shelf of beginner books between Nick Einhorn's Practical Encyclopedia and Mark Wilson's Complete Course (that pesky alphabet forces me to arrange things in its order).

Check out Jamie D Grant's "The Approach". Tons of great material there.

Hey, mlippo, who the heck asked you? Just go back to burning my books as you once said you did here at the café. Also, I really, really, would suggest you mind your own business, at least whenever it has ANYTHING at all to do with me. As those who really pay attention know, you always chime in with your sillinesses when I'm involved. Stop with your obvious obviousness. Because, you have no idea as to what you're talking about, and I certainly don't need or want your oh, so, knowledgeable advice. Zaphury can recommend whatever the h*ll he likes (such vast knowledge) and I can state my opinion of his knowledge whenever I like. And if you're going to reply by telling me that you have your right to your opinions, yes - you sure do (even though you have no idea as to what you're talking about!)but so do I. And, you know? I think that I DO have a bit of an "idea." And of course, how right you are - he can't recommend them if he hasn't got them yet - but as we all know, if he listens to you, if he did have them, he'd burn them!!
