Are having doves in your act at birthday shows practical or impossible?

I can't see doing a full dove act at a birthday party, but having one or two is possible and will add to the show.

When I was first starting out I did birthday parties ALL the time. I just performed inside of course and I was at least 10 feet away.

Doves are possible at birthday parties. However, I would recommend getting them from a box or bag rather than body loads. I also recommend that you train the dove to stay put on a "special" wand that is rough enough that his feet won't slip. Then you can let kids pass the wand around with the bird perched on it without touching the dove. (Doves seem to like that better. Magicians just work for smart doves.)

I use one dove in my birthday act. Using a dove pan I pretend to make a birthday cake by adding all sorts of ingredients. It is my closing effect and the children go crazy when they realize that it is a real bird.
Be prepared for the children to want to pet your dove though. I usually put him away and say that he is taking a nap. After the children have gone back to other events at the party, I allow the Birthday child to hold the dove for a picture. |

I use 2 doves at the most in my birthday shows.
I think the main problem is first when to produce them, and second what to do with them after you produced them. If you leave them concealed for any length of time, make sure they can breathe, and give them some water around their faces with a squirt bottle. This will help keep them cool. The last thing you want is to produce a dead or hurt animal- you won't work for quite some time. I produce the doves separate in unrelated effects. Each is put away after it is produced, (the nap line is good) because with children if its out of sight, it's out of mind. I made the mistake of leaving them out in the beginning. The children's attention was not on me, but the doves, and I didn't have control over the audience. IMO this is un-professional as a performer, and can ruin your show. MM

I tear off the dove's head and eat it in my b-day party shows then spit it back on.

OMG I could just see the look on the little kid's faces if you did it to them.... I'd probably have to leave the room due to laughter.

2 Dove productions at EVERY Birthday show.
I hang a Hula hoop over the backdrop corner because we do the Flying Carpet at Every Birthday as well so the 2 doves sit on the bottom of the hoop until the levitation of the birthday child finale. We remove the doves off the hoop and the bunny that sits on a side table after production for the finale. I concur with Sanders (as usual), No body loads.

I'm not sure I agree with not doing a body load at a children's party. I occassionally open by tearing multicolored tissue paper into strips. Next, I have one of the kids grab magic dust from the air and sprinkle on the pieces. Nothing happens, still torn. Then I get the birthday kid to say a special magic word and instead of restoring the paper, produce a dove from a body load. I carry a small cage under my table out of site to hold the bird until the end of the show.
At the end of the show, I use a double load dove pan. First load is a small gift for the birthday child. I hand the gift to the child, produce a dove from the second load, bring out the littel cage and put them together. This always seems to go over well. I wouldn't do multiple body loads but the one works for me.

Personally I have done a full dove act in birthday parties, outside, and in windy conditions. The exprience of doing a full dove act is priceless.
No matter how many stage shows I have performed at. Or TV, stage, celebrities, trade shows etc. in my resume. As magicians we will always be asked by regular people, "Do you do kid shows". Personally I do only when they pay me X amount of money. G0THIKE |

Dan,
It has been determined that eating dove heads causes cancer in magicians if the doves are dyed (especially yellow and/or green). Don't worry though. Just use naturally yellow or green doves. Just picking at you (as usual). PM about your invisible harness and I will mention it in the Dove Hotline. In reality, the headless goose is a very old magic trick. Of course, Lucy dresses hers for Christmas (in Santa suits). Working with doves is certainly easier. Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

Well thanks, glod. Yes I am good. LOL. As magicians, we should remember that almost anything is possible however, what works for me may not work for someone else. What was it that Dirty Harry said "man's gotta know his limitations".
I don't always do the body load production for b'parties. All depends on the situation.

For birthday parties I don't do body loads due to costume limitations. There are plenty of other types of loads that will work well, and have for me. So play around with differnt effects- you may find something that you like and never thought of.

Nobody could enjoy body loads more than I do. And when I do perform at a birthday party, you can expect birds. My favorite way to end MisMade Flag, Torn and Restored Newspaper, and Soft Soap is with a live dove production. I don't get them from a thumb tip. Really! I don’t!
But live body loads at children's birthday parties are a hassle. My primary aversion to live body loads at a home party is because the "schedule" frequently means very little. I don't like live stock loaded for very long. I'd stand in line to get to do the tricks! Bob, feeder of smart doves Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

Hi 12345,
Producing doves at birthday party shows is impractical---but I do it anyway because I’m stubborn. Well-meaning friends have told me to stop producing doves from body loads when performing at birthday parties---but I do it anyway despite the hassles because I’m a masochist. My relatives have repeatedly advised me to refrain from performing my dove production when the party is held outdoor because it’s embarrassing for a magician to be seen scampering after a dove that has flown away to a nearby tree----but I do it anyway because I’m crazy. So, if like me, you’re all of the above, welcome to the world of birthday party dove magic. Ben Benjay Manila, Philippines |
