What do you do if a kid(under 6) gets close enough that he could see how the effect is done or if he attempts to take/grab one of the props(i.e. sponge balls)?
Are you watching closely?

Make him a security guard to keep away the other kids.

1 . Have no effects where distance is a problem
2. Work on your audience management 3. Look to the Childs mum or dad to interact |

Tap him on the top of the head and say "I need you to sit there." Point to where you want him. Smile as you say it.
Repeat as needed. They are kids. They don't do it to be bad. They are just curious. It is up to you to set your boundaries. If it is really a problem ask a parent to intercede or ask them to sit farther back so it is harder for them to get through the other kids to the front. -Mary Mowder |

Buy Danny Orleans kid show DVD's, follow his suggestions, and you won't have these types of problems.

Mary nailed it. Just firmly point out where you need them to sit, and tell them to do it. No big deal, just a bit of kindly firmness.

Take some colored masking tape to your show. Create a defined boundary for the kids to sit behind by taping it on the floor around the stage area. And as Danny Orleans suggests, you can also put "X's" on the stage floor area where you want your volunteers to stand during a routine. It works.
Now you posed the question regarding kids under 6. You didn't say exactly how young, but as pbj mentions above, it is up to you to have the parents intervene - ideally before the show ever starts, by taking the youngest trouble kids either out of the room or to the back of the room depending on just how much of a distraction they are causing. - Gary |

I hate boundaries (unless they are fun like Creative Magic's Biggest wand that I inflate for major gigs, which most kids pat away on.)
I use footprints for the kids to stand on and large laundry bins for my opening number (Can-opener) I perform in front of my boxes, alongside this footprints so limit the time a child has of getting to my open-top boxes. But a silk over the top of "Santa in the Chimney", "Magic Painting" etc helps preserve the secret. I only remove them as the patter for the trick starts. I make the kids sit on their bottom/clap/laugh at the front of the show - and only select from kids following the rules - most are used to doing this in school assemblies anyway. If I have an intruder(in my space) I ask their name (they stop and answer) then send them back reminding them of the rules.

Mary's advice is spot on. I usually add, "You sit down over there so everybody can see." Implying that they're obstructing other people's view.
Works for me! I also use the Magic Zone Tape to set a boundary, plus the Footprints for volunteers. Those work like real magic! |

Tape on the floor and footprints works almost all the time for me. On the few times it doesn't, Mary's method does the trick. That one time in 5 or 6 years that doesn't work, there's the Magic Baseball Bat.

Now.... What do you do when they're 40, drunk and weigh 300 pounds?
I'd rather be heckled by the kid
