Thoughts? The video's target is laymen (it's not a convention-like routine). The reactions are great but handling isn't as smooth as it could have been. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XUqthl5La3g

Oh boy...
Well if you can't say something nice... But then no one learns. This was not good at all. Please please please stop performing until you have put some work into a presentation. |

Thanks Kyle! I don't mind criticism, but I prefer constructive criticism.
Chad, I agree in part that the trick lacks much presentation, but I feel you're thinking like a magician to much (obviously we're magicians and should think like them). You judge the whole video based on the trick (Are his fans perfect, does he have a routine, is there a story, etc). The video is about how magicians control attention not how well can Tyler and David present card to mouth. The trick is used to show the skill of controlling attention. A layman watching the video when they see the "spectators' view" think "that's exactly what I would do if he performed for me" and then they see the "other perspective" and see the people missing the card being placed in the mouth, watch how long it takes them to notice it and how they react. You're looking at how card to mouth is presented on the video while I focused on presenting the video so it's more than just a trick (if it's just a trick, laymen's focus is usually on "how does he do that"). So I presented the video as an example of a skill magicians use. For my next video I'm planning to focus on presenting it as a trick/routine as opposed to using a trick for the demonstration of a skill. ~Tyler Linton |

If this video is used to show how to control attention then it falls into the category of a teaching video. You added nothing new to teach. And really shouldn't post videos that reveal a secret. Especially one you didn't invent and do not perform well. Quote:

watch how long it takes them to notice it and how they react. Its literally a second because you didn't perform it well. Watch Michael Finney do card on forehead and see how long it takes people to notice. that's controlling attention. Quote:

So I presented the video as an example of a skill magicians use. The video fails to show this as anything other than you performing badly for your friends at school. You fooled them sure. But they weren't entertained. Thus this video can never be what you want it to be. It can never showcase something 'more than just a trick' because you only performed this as just a trick. Quote:

Im not trying to be mean or offensive with this post. Please don't take it that way. Its very constructive if you read it without bias. You are obviously a new performer in magic and we have all been there. But as a beginner you shouldn't be making videos to show skills you don't have. I think 99% of the people on this board, would rather see you throw this into a larger routine with a decent presentation, and post that video for us to watch. I hope you understand. |

Thanks for the feedback, no offense taken.

I didn't mean to teach or expose the secret, as I explain nothing in the video. In the video all you can see is the card was placed in the mouth when the spectator wasn't watching, I don't explain/reveal the sleight used. Quote:

He's had a bit more time to practice that than I had this trick (he's performed it since before I was born I believe). Quote:
I can't wait! Pretty sure this is sarcasm but when I upload it I'd love your opinion because you aren't afraid to speak your mind and you give feedback to help me improve. Quote:
You are obviously a new performer in magic and we have all been there. I'm not very new to magic actually (although it may look like it on this video), I am new at making videos though so thanks for the feedback, I'll work on improving. Thanks for the feedback, I appreciate all critisim I get. You've provided me with things to work on and improve, I'll keep this in mind and start focusing on presentation more in tricks and routines. |

When it comes to magic, you are still in the infant stages. I have been at it for over 30years now. I know I look great for my age.
But really I have. don't worry about showcasing skills or making videos. You are not there yet. Concentrate on presentational ideas and finding a style all your own. The rest will come after that. |

It may not have been your intention to reveal the secret behind the trick, but you did. First, you told people what you would do before you did it. Second, the angle you film at shows the set up for the card control.
So I'm left wondering why you want to make a video to teach lay people that magicians use misdirection, film it so as to reveal a trick, then post it on a magicians forum. I'm glad you enjoy magic - keep at it. I'm just not sure what this video is achieving. |

Don't know why everyone is being so mean about this. I thought the video was great, and you guys got some awesome reactions! I'd recommend just showing the routine once and not talking about the method at all, and maybe just splicing in different reaction shots.
Keep it up! |

Though I commend you for posting the video- I have to agree with Chad's thoughts on this. There was no "energy" to the presentation and the card skills were lacking. Actually- most anyone can get a startling reaction to a trick- the key is "keeping" your audiences attention beyond one trick all the while generating laughs and special moments. I did not see any of this from the video. Also, as Chad stated - "Style". There was no style that I could see. This will work itself out through experience and performing. You will discover your style in time. If you keep working at it along with the practice- it will eventually come if you are serious about performing.
Good Luck..... RNK
