Does anyone know the specific West African Penny that's the same size as a half dollar and made in copper? There are several on the big auction site but they don't specify the diameter and I can't seem to find solid info online stating the diameters for specific African coins.

Do you mean the coin with the Star of David. The coin is made of a Copper-Nickel alloy, weighs 9.65 grams and measures 30.5mm in diameter

Hi Tree, that sounds about right. A U.S. Half Dollar is 30.61mm, so this looks like it fits the bill. Do you know the name/value of that coin? There are several on ebay that resemble this, but they are of different values and no info on diameter.

I have a bunch of the East African ten cent piece circa 1920's ; it has a hole, elephant tusks on one side, and is all dark copper. They seem to have gone up in price, but here is what they look like.

I use a 1888 east African ten pence coin.
It is 34mm in dia in between a half dollar and a silver dollar size.It is copper. I also use a silver Portugal coin the same dia for a spellbound routein.I had Roy Kuepper make me a split face coin one side is a Marshall island gold color coin and the other is a Portugal silver coin.It is also 34mm I use this coin in conjunction with my African copper coin for a triple spellbound effect. The coin being asked by the OP is a British WEST Africa one pence coin. I think there more hard to find than genuinely rare.
Heres a link to one on ebay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1936-KN-BRITISH-......97.l4276 |

Update: I bought the coin from ebay and received it today. Was surprised to find it's silver, not copper. The composition is copper and nickel though, so we'll see how it oxidizes.

It won't oxidize much, and has a funky feel because it is cupro nickel; I would tell you to reconsider the east african penny. It's all copper and will get very dark.

Found an East African 10 cents coin (copper) at a coin expo. I think these are the one tedski initially recommended. Very nice. Thank you.

Chris, Haven't been here for a while, so a belated you're welcome. The East African coins seem more common; I think it was West africa that destroyed a lot of the colonial coins when they gained independence The West african coins are "silver" I doubt hey'll darken, the East African coins do get nice and dark - I have some from several decades the ones from '36 are a nice dark patina.

Thanks, jordani. / And you're right Tree, thanks for the clarification. I think that's what jordani meant by using quotes.

Thanks tedski for the recommendation on the east African coin. I happened to read this thread and got one off Ebay and I am using that instead of an English penny for Spellbound and I think it's a lot better. I have had people not even realize the half dollar changed at first when using an English penny because it's too shiny just from the oils in my hands.

FWIW, the East African coin also comes in a size similar to the US quarter which allows for some interesting possibilities.....
