And it is naive to think the musicians didn't either. In fact Merle Haggard specifically stated that he got into songwriting after jail BECAUSE of the song royalties which he knew would be his retirement.

Johnny knew he adapted the song. Doubt at that time he thought of himself as stealing.

Tom,
I never did meet Carl Perkins, just heard that story from Johnny. I didn't get to play with him. The biggest name from that era I ever played with was Stonewall Jackson but it wasn't in those days. It was in the 1990s. I'm just a youngster at 56 and he's only 3 years younger than my mom; 6 years younger than my dad. Stonewall is a very nice guy too. And he treats my mom and dad like they were family (in a good way ) Those old-timers were/are far more reachable and friendly than the later generations. (How's that for sounding old?) I still hear from Stonewall every Christmas. Tom T. Hall sends a Christmas card every year too. And Bill Monroe would call on the phone. I never played with Tom but he did see one of my shows. I played with Bill once. That's enough name-dropping, except for this last one; A quote from the father of a very good friend of mine: "Plagiarism is basic to all culture" - Charles Seeger, Musicologist Bazinga! |

Lots of singers lifted from other sources then, and I don't know what his exact feelings on the matter were. I'll hold judgement until I read Cash's and Jenkins' own words on the subject, if available. Regardless, Cash's overall record as a person far outweighs this mark.

Slide, all I know is that Cash said, "Sometime later I met up with Gordon Jenkins and we talked about what had happened, and everything was right."

Tommy mentioned this very early on, Slide, but you continue to cite Gordon Jenkins as originator. Irony.
"Another wrinkle to the whole authorship question is that Jenkins himself almost certainly lifted the musical motif for his song Crescent City Blues from a 1930s recording of the same name by the great blues pianist Little Brother Montgomery. Montgomery wrote his instrumental piano piece for his longtime hometown New Orleans, which is often referred to as "The Crescent City"." http://www.ckua.com/04/11/13/Gordon-Jenk......ID=12101 |

Gordon Jenkins was a good man. But he was also a complex man. For example, he liked coffee, but he did not like having coffee thrown at him. In fact, Jenkins hated being burned by any hot liquid. In that way, he was like many of us, sensitive to heat. What a character. Goodbye, Jenkins. I hope you're throwing coffee at God right now.

It is the tune and the words that make him the originator. Lots of country tunes share the same melody. But no one is confusing wild side of life for it wasn't god who made honkey tonk angels.

Tom,
I don't really have any stories that anyone else would be interested in. No Jello in the bathtub stories. But the first time I played with Stonewall Jackson was in a small school in a town so small it's doesn't even exist today. He showed me his attitude was that those people paid there good money for a show and he made sure they got the best show he could give them, just as if they were at the Opry. That's something I take with me to every show I do. My most endearing memory about Johnny Cash was when I told him how, growing up where everyone and his dog played an instrument, it was hard to get people to take me serious when I said music would be my career. Johnny said, "Never let anyone tell you you aren't what you know you are, or that you can't do what you know you're made to do." As I said those old-timers were/are great guys. Bazinga! |

Laurie makes an excellent point about Little Brother Montgomery's Crescent City Blues. But, that said, Jenkins version was a fairly unremarkable standard 12 bar blues, that has a few similar lyrics. Cash, with the Tennessee Two, modified the melody considerably and beat completely. That, with the distinctive guitar passage and signature alternative bass that they made famous, gave Folsom a distinct identity of its own. Jenkins's mild and rather bland folk ballad would have been completely forgotten but for incredible transformation by Cash. Also note that the distinctive bridge in Folsom is completely absent in Crescent City.
I really don't think Cash intentionally lifted anything. I'm sure he had heard the Jenkins version and it is very likely that he heard Montgomery's song as well. There were hundreds of songs at the time that were all derivative and sounded very much the same. But Cash did the right and charitable thing when he settled with Jenkins. |
