I've practiced close up card magic for several years, took a break, and am just now returning to it. However, I have wanted to get into stage magic for some time now, yet I don't know where to start. I can't afford the vast majority of big box illusions that are common today, so that is a hinderance. I also am not aware of where to learn the basics. I essentially need the "Royal Road" for stage magic and a way to actually practice it. What would you suggest?

Are you wanting to do illusions or just have a stage show? If you are wanting to transition to the stage, then reality is many effects that can be done closeup can be performed on stage. As a personal rule, I do not perform any closeup effects that can't be done at both levels. When I want to break in a new "small stage" effect I will work a restaurant. It is amazing how many performances you can do with the effect when strolling. By the end of the evening you have a good feel on what works, what doesn't and a plan to make it better. Some of my effects that fit:
Daryls Pakistan Rope effects Inv Deck (small deck for Close Up - Jumbo dect for stage)

Here is another great resource http://www.laflinmagicstore.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=BOSWI. I own both David Seebach's & Duane Laflin's books and these are MUST haves, whether you do BIG illusions or are just "considering" it. All the information is from people who have done it!

Start at the beginning.
Write a story, then get the illusion that will make the story come alive.

Mark,
Duane Laflin has written lots of books, and you aren't specific as to which one you are referring to. Are you referring to "On Stage With Illusions"? - Donald

Yes Donald that's the one! Sorry, my mistake that I didn't make it clear in my post. Especially with the link not working!
