Paul's books are essential reading for anyone interested in this area.
My own Occult Magic series has information on promoting seances, particularly in volume 3. |

I'm not a professional entertainer, and my advice is worth what you are paying for it. I have been running my own company for 11 years last january. I can share some thoughts on marketing (and sales) 'generally'. If this sounds like I am teaching you to suck eggs then I apologise.
0) What are you selling? DO PEOPLE WANT TO BUY IT? Do *ENOUGH* people want to buy it at the rate you are selling it at? You need to have hard numbers for this (How many people are buying this sort of thing already? How much do they pay? Is it enough for you or not? 1) How do you connect with those people? 2) Passive vs active selling (0) is where people go off and do market research. Where does your target market hang out? Do you know any people that you are *NOT* competing with that would be ok with you talking to their market (i.e. their audience), to see if what you want to do has legs or no?. There have been some fine suggestions (horror cons etc) in this thread already. If after doing the market research, you discover that the market isn't there, or isn't big enough, or isn't worth enough, then you either need to revise your idea, cancel it, modify prices etc. I also think you want a profile of your dream customer. What is his/her name, where does he/she live, what does he/she do for a living etc. This will help you focus your efforts in getting your message to them. (1) There's a rule in business that work from previous customers is better than from new ones. People tend to buy more from people that they've bought from before, if those suppliers were good. So - in what you currently do - can you sell your idea to people that are currently buying from you? Secondly, people are MUCH more likely to buy from an unknown, if someone that they know REFERS the unknown (supplier) to them. So, do you know people that will refer you to people that they know? Are you currently working as a magician or storyteller? Is there a way you can leverage that? (2) As others have said, you need a website, you need youtube videos of what you are doing, you need testimonials from people saying how awesome your show is. You then need some mechanism to drive people to your site. If you have a lot of money, then you can advertise in mags / podcasts / conventions / newsletters / radio etc. The trick is to advertise where your customers are going to be. Most people DO NOT have massive amounts of money for this, So you'll need to piggy back off of others if you can. Again as others have said, are there existing venues, or entertainers, that you can collaborate with / compliment / give business to, that will then put you on their ticket? Social media will work IF your customers are to be found there. If they are, were in social media are they? Is there a hashtag, forum, facebook group etc where you can find them? Coldcalling is soul destroying, and has a 1% return rate, but also lets you directly hit people that otherwise you might miss. You may be able to buy phonelists from companies of people that match your ideal target. This is probably venues as well as individuals, but if you could (for example) get hold of a list of horrorcon attendees, or horror magazine subscribers or whatever. Thing is, you need to be active. Putting up an awesome website is pointless if no one knows it exists. One thing that might be worth trying is finding where the local storytellers go, and see if you can hang out with them. Where I am in the UK, the local bunch do an "open mic night", so maybe you could find a similar thing and do some bizarre magic, with a view to advertising yourself (... and for a full seance call me...). Make a point of getting a friend to tag along to video it. Pubs here want excuses to get people in. Anyway, best of luck. Sales and marketing is hard work, and can be very emotionally draining. |

I think Slim, may have the best way to get the word out there !
I would love to see someone take his advice and respond back here to the feedback and offers you get from advertising a "Seance" on the radio. Paranormal Entertainment, may be a much better way to advertise than "Seance" . I think a big part of it, will be Location, Location, Location ! I, would try it here in my area ... but, fear of being burnt at the stake, prevents me from doing so! LOL ~G

In Episode 5 of the Séances and Spookshows podcast, due to be released this week, Bill Montana and I discuss great ways to find new venues in your area. We will also give you a chance to receive a free copy of Bill's ebook that outlines how to do this. Keep your eyes peeled, you might just find the keys to the city.

I have quite a collection of Séance material and virtually every one of them say the same thing as far as performance: Get the sitters involved! As Voodini says in his literary gold mines, the people who get the most out of it are the ones that put the most into it.
I plan on getting each and every one of the sitters involved in some way so each one experiences something exciting. After that, they'll tell their stories to their friends and they'll tell their friends, and the story will grow and amplify on its own. Before you know it, people will be saying they heard that people saw full body apparitions! |

The main part I need help with is how to rent out a venue, preferably it being one that won't cost me thousands of dollars.

The is only part of his web cast series and for professional speakers however the stuff is useful when booking a venue as it can be applied to other venues and not just hotels. It also good information for those of you who are trying to set up a magic convention as it may help you understand and avoid some of the common associated pitfalls of booking this sort of event. That's a hint by the way and it would be worth the hour of your time to watch this so you can negotiate a better deal for the convention costs. Also you can get better prices on rooms for the attendees of the convention but you will need to know more than whats in the above clip for that type pf booking. But the above clip is a good place to start. Now if you have a look at the thing that will be given away during the podcast I doing above you find some additional information about finding and booking a venue that may not cost you a dime but garnish you information and reputation for discovering a new potentially haunted location and more but you have to wait till the podcast releases to find out more about that gem. |

I don't know about the US, but in Canada many musuems, galleries and community art centres have meeting/multi-purpose rooms that are rentable by the community. Many have a sliding scale making it affordable for artists and arts events (like yours). Three guerrilla models that have worked for me in the past: - partnering with existing organizations. I did a seance/spookshow at a local museum as part of their Halloween Fundraiser. They provided a room, gave me advertising, and we split the revenues. - partnering with a local business. On a predictable slow night at a local lounge/restaurant, the owners let us set up in the main area (it was more of a psychic fair than seance, but I think both could work) and do our thing. We could charge what we wanted, and the lounge was happy to have new faces come on a night that would have been a drudge. - Disused commercial second story/basement spaces. Some building owners are quite ammenable to letting serious people temporarily occupy dissused second story spaces, especially if there is some reciprocity. I have secured several venues this way, for magic & art exhibitions, by offering labour as sweat equity (to clean or do minor repair/painting), and mentioning the business as a sponsor on all poster, handbills, etc. A local BRZ (Business Revitalization Zone) or Chamber of Commerce may point you to potential sites, or you could just go ask directly. |

Besides pendulums, and books, what other BOR items could you offer for a seance when you are trying to book it?
