I couldn't agree more. I only wanted to mention how much Kevin and Michael's system is and Curtis felt the need to blast me again.

Oh Eaton,
I didn't blast you, you assumed I was. I just simply said its great to know a system into buying it. You even said something of such. Sorry you feel guilty of something. I forgot about your system and no it does not bother me, I really haven't given thought. A. No need for it at end of the day...

I used to be of the same mindset, Mindpro, but in the past year I have changed a lot in the way I do things. More often than not, I transfer all the things you mention into a pdf file and save it to iBooks. I can reference this on my phone (which I always have with me), or my iPad. I can also make notations on these devices. There are numerous ways, but I generally use the "Notes" application that comes with the iPhone. I can upload things to the cloud (I often use Dropbox*) and I don't have to worry about losing them. As for tracking, similar ways can be used. I use as simple spreadsheet. And this is coming from someone who is really not much of a technophile. Paperless is really a lot easier than it used to be. *BTW, this stuff doesn't stay there. I only have it there until the gig is over, then I save it elsewhere. |

Oh, I agree, but in the circumstances I mentioned I feel using your phone, ipad or other device is rather unprofessional and often inappropriate. For example, if I am at a school that has a strict "no Cell Phone policy" in the building and I need to pull up a contract or some previous email correspondence, it is quite inappropriate to do so knowing their strict guidlines.
Even when it permitted, looking it up on your phone in order to show someone else is quite off-putting, rather than simply opening a file and handing them the information. Also makes it easier if they want a copy on the spot which can also happen frequently. To me the issue is not going paperless, which I know is easy, but rather having thorough and quick access to original and printed documents as needed. I hate people at an event,m, airport, rental car counter, limo or taxi, that have to fumble around to find something electronically, then have to hand their device to show it to someone. Again, to me very unprofessional and personable. Also I find many others (adults) also quite put off by this in business. I understand I am probably in the majority on this. As I said, it's a matter of preference. |

I agree with that Mindpro. Perhaps it is age. I learned the hard way in 1981 when I enlisted: If it ain't on paper it doesn't exist. I know that's a different situation but the words have stuck with me. I print everything and take with me to the gigs: copy of contract, all emails, notes I made during conversations, etc. School principals and administrators, especially, are usually conservative in the way they do things, and paper gives the impression of a professional over squinting to see a phone screen. I also have the same person feeling about companies advertising only a cell phone number. It looks like a flight risk. A landline says "permanence."
Dang, I'm old (fashioned). Bazinga! |

Haha! I think a landline says "archaic".
I do see your point. I just find myself drifting away from it. I can't remember the last time someone asked me to see my paperwork. Besides, an iPad is not all that hard to see; you CAN pinch it bigger for those tired old eyes, guys! As an old educator myself, I find that group to be among the first to accept new technology. |

From the sounds of it (and from what I have heard among friends), it seems the ultimate answer, to Life, the Universe, and, Everything may not be 42, but rather "All of the Above."
As helpful and well-meaning as many contributors have been to this thread, I think many are right, despite having opposing views. Depending on the market, the client, and the performer, paper or software may be the better choice. I'm sure the folks at Showbiz CRM have heard many of the same comments as I about emailing invoices, having info available instantly at all times, and tracking payments, for example. Why? Because those who want to do that make the comments. Showbiz and Paper Tree both were designed to fill the need that performers preferring a modern software solution. And long that line, the use of a paper notebook and forms are equally as valid (I should know! I still carry a Moleskine notebook with me everywhere for certain things). I feel the most valuable thing this thread has brought to the table, in my humble opinion, has been the opportunity for magicians to be exposed to other system and get them thinking about possibly moving to another system that may be better for them, or even simply applying one or two aspects of someone else's method to their own tracking system. Keep up the awesome ideas and it is a joy to see the diverse systems! Best regards, Scott |
