Most countries will not be able to cope with the climate. It will almost certainly be a south American country that wins. IMHO They know how to play in that sort of heat and they also pretty good I hear.

Have to admit, I'm about as interested to see how things play out re: Brazil actually being ready for the cup, from an infrastructure (if that is the best word) standpoint. Basically, everything to do with the world cup that is outside the pitches.

From a purely aesthetic point of view, I especially enjoy the early round games where the strongest African and Asian sides play attractive and surprisingly strong soccer. They never seem to make it far in the tournament, but they add a little extra sparkle to the whole affair.
Pity that the final is often a disappointment.

In the betting site for Top Scorer, in the first 6 places are 3 from Argentina, Messi, Aguero and Higuain, that was my point before that Argentina must fix the defense from the middle on we are ok

Pabloinus, I agree with you that Argentina's strike force is superb. They could do very well if only they had a more solid defense. I'll never forget when Argentina won the 1986 World Cup. I was living in New York City, and cars filled with screaming people were driving around Manhattan honking their horns. Magic!
Hey, Kambiz! Another life-long Man Utd fan! (Hated, as we are, by all other football club supporters around the world). I predict the English strikers Rooney, Wellbeck, Sturridge and possibly Defoe will give it their all ... but England as a cohesive unit simply hasn't got their act together yet. They need a better and more passionate manager, in my opinion. P.S. I don't know if Januzaj has decided yet. Sammagic: Ryan Giggs was a wonderful asset to the Welsh team, and a good role model and inspiration to some of their other players, including Gareth Bale (who is another amazing Welsh player that sadly won't be seen at the World Cup). I believe that, when choosing his citizenship, Giggs also had the option to become a South African (on his mother's side). But you are right; had Ryan chosen to play for England, the world would have benefited from seeing his incredible footballing skills much more often. Finally, it's interesting that no one has mentioned the Italians. They used to be a force to be reckoned with ... (although their defend, defend, defend style could get really boring). |

Can't think weather will be much of an issue here.
The record highs in the month of July (for Rio) were only in the upper 80's, and those were the record highs. Record lows were mostly in the 60s, but one day actually had 33F as the low! Summer in Europe and North America is not as hot in South America - depending on where you are. I've seen highlights of the '79 WC in Argentina with players wearing gloves. '70 and '86 were very hot - but even in '70 & '86, Italy and Germany were in the final game, so I'm not sure how much heat was a part.

England's manager Roy Hodgson has revealed that he is far more worried about the prospect of England playing in the tropical Amazon rainforest than the possibility of being grouped with Brazil, Spain or Argentina in Friday’s World Cup draw.
England will be drawn in a group containing one of the top eight seeds on Friday by virtue of their Fifa world ranking but the potential venues are of greatest concern to Hodgson. Climatic conditions vary considerably across Brazil, with temperatures expected to approach 95F (35C) in Manaus, which is part of the Amazon, but also in Salvador, Natal and Fortaleza. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/footbal......zil.html Bear in mind the football season here is in the winter and so they are not used to playing in the sun.

I think that many neutrals are hoping that Messi can achieve the World Cup that will allow him be mentioned in the same breath as Pele and Maradona, perhaps as the most gifted footballer that has ever graced the game. Many believe him to be the greatest ever, (4 times Ballon D'Or winner, 2nd this year only by a small margin, even though he spent a long time out with injury) but without winning the biggest prize of them all, he'll always be an also ran.
With Brazil, Pele played in some of the greatest teams ever assembled. Maradona essentially won the World Cup by himself (although among some other great players). Argentina were a shambles in the last World Cup (under the management of Maradona), and their team this time around is not hugely more bestowed with talent. However, without Maradona as manager, there seems to be a realisation that their team exists solely as a vehicle for Messi, and as a result, Argentina qualified top of their group. I, for one, hope that Messi's time has come. Some Messi, for your viewing pleasure; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wEhniGlFDtA I like the commentators in No. 27 - "That is World Class" "That is Messi Class. That's above World Class, Gerry" What's your favourite? No 1. is a real contender vs Maradona's goal against England, linked above For the purists, "The King of Dribbling" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8cBIAwh4EjA Enjoy!

The historical averages for Manaus are 87-88F for highs, and mid-70s for the lows.
Humidity makes it worse, though.

For people over 50, the Brazil team of 1970 with Pele, Jairzinho, Tostao, Gerson and Rivelino was maybe the greatest ever, these 5 players were the number 10 in their own teams, unbelievable.
Then Maradona in 1986 and Holland with Johan Cruyff, all of them a pleasure to watch |

Holland. One of the best teams to have never won a World Cup (erm...they haven't, have they???)

You are correct, they never won, 2 2nd place 1978 against Argentina in Argentina (without Maradona) and 2010 against Spain in South Africa.
Still fantastic football, they were the ones that gave the football the speed that later on all the european and then all the world started playing, before the game was more paced, Holland changed the game in my opinion. |
