" LIKE PHANTOMS, LINGERING "
I would like to tell you a story concerning phantoms. Phantoms which are different from those you might envision. These phantoms are more comforting than disconcerting. They are not ghostly forms that roam the night. In fact, they may be here for some at this very moment. My tale began while talking to a friend about his day. He was in the habit of visiting patients at the V.A. He said there were times, he didn't know what to say. Memories of buddies lost or limbs lost as part of the cost of war. The conversation triggered a thought in my mind. When a person suffers the loss of an arm or leg; they will often experience phantom pains. They feel pain in a limb which is no longer there. I thought how like the death of their buddies this pain is. Death may take our friends , family and loved ones. There will be a phantom pain for a while. I do not know if time heals, but time will distance the event. In time, new phantoms come, and through them the departed touch us once again. It may appear as a fragrance in the air, the glimpse of a color they loved to wear. The taste of a certain food or wine they used to share. The way the sunlight plays in someone's hair. Phantoms live in favorite songs they claimed as 'theirs. Phantoms live in many things. In cards and small loving gifts which we treasure and adore. A passage from a favorite book, a special look. In the memory of a smile a tender kiss and so much more. Things that were experienced by our senses, our heart are rekindled, resurrected by phantoms in our mind. No one is ever truly gone. They live on forever, lingering phantoms in our hearts and memory. They live eternally you see , in every prayer that's said. They are 'in' part of every tear we shed. Severed perhaps, but never lost. Phantom pain erased. Replaced by the joy of knowing they are part of us, forever near. Kotah |

There is wonderful work with phantom limbs, using mirrors to create the illusion of a real one.
