Over the years I have had great responses to rabbit puppet in the hat.
Also I have used: baby in a gift bag, sock puppet from a book. Any others thinking outside the hat? From Pedro (Señor Wenceslas)the head in the box to Petra's inspirational work, puppetry is "Ser right".

I have a little pig puppet I've used in a top hat, just like a rabbit. I call him "The Astonishing Mr. Pig".

I have a puppet of a rabbit that comes out of a drawstring bag. It's pretty big, too. I got it from a friend 20 years ago have never used it in a show.

I'm writing up my Clown Jack-In-The-Box effect and routine for a new section on Clown Magic I've started at The Magic Nook. It won't be ready for publishing for a month or two, but it's basically a routine I used in my clown days, a small box with a crank on the side that plays the traditional "Pop Goes the Weasel" bringing up the clown hand puppet (named "Poppo" ) who then goes into some "spring cleaning" of his box, getting rid of spring snakes, slinky toys and other fun stuff. Finally he does a magic trick with a helper from the audience.

That sounds like a good routine, Jim! Is your jack-in-the-box puppet one of those with a fake gloved hand holding it?

Jim. Nice idea. I like the classic setting and including magic.
Lots of magic can be done 1 handed or with audience member assist. Are you using the traditional tune:music. Now it is a big "box" at the top of my brain.

In his book, "Laughter All The Way", Ron Bishop published three puppet routines, the very best of which was a puppet Panda who lived in a shoe box. He included all his bits of business and the book is well worth checking out. Originally published by Goodliffe publications circa 1970, your best bet is UK second hand dealers.

I use a big monkey puppet with vent but he's not "in" anything.

Currently, I use a rabbit in the hat puppet occasionally (in one particular show for one trick as I need the puppets hands to grasp/pour a container).
But every show and walk-about I use a dog arm puppet. It looks real so folks stop. It can do more through it's open mouth and a slit in the back which allows silks to vanish. And it's the same breed as on a popular tv commercial.... my customers already know these puppies are mischievious and so great fun. I tried to use an Axtell Cockatoo with the bird-arm illusion but found little children ignored it, even though I was using vent.

Nice doggy.
Another thing I use was put together with a old bulk Elmer's glue box, scissors and duct tape. Doors were cut in the box. One on each side and a big window in the front. The top naturally can be pushed open. I originally made it for a puppet version of the YouTube video "Charlie bit my finger." The puppet baby routine has expanded to much much more, over the last eleven years. Included is the baby blues with harmonica
