I've recently attended my first local assembly. I'm just curious as to how things go at your local assemblies to see what the major differences between each one might be.
Things like.. How many times a month do you meet? Do you guys hold any special events (like auctions, parties of any sort, sales?) How many people are in your assembly? What do you guys tend to do during each assembly? Any replies would be great as I'm just curious. |

- Our assembly meets once a month at an iHop.
- We have an auction and flea market once a year in the spring. - 20-30 members attend the meetings, while 20-40 members never attend a meeting. - The meeting starts out with some local magic news, then we have someone teach an effect. Our local magic historian does a presentation and then we take a short break. The last half of the meeting, anyone is welcome to present show effects. |

We meet once per month.
Usually lectures by well known magicians. Holiday dinner with a magic show at a restaurant. Member competition. We're off for 3 months during the summer. I don't know how many members we have, probably about 40-60.

You guys are lucky to have such big clubs!
There's probably a dozen or so in my club. I always have envied a club that's about 2 hours north of me as they meet once a week. I had really wondered if other clubs met more often than mine as well (Mine's once a month as well), but I see that the whole once a month deal is the average. You guys with those big clubs.. Are you in big cities? Or does your local area just really seem to be in to magic? |

I live in a small community (Prince George, British Columbia, Canada). Unfortunately, there is no SAM assembly here. I do get to travel and I can occasionally attend other assemblies.

Assembly 200 in Seattle meets once a month for two hours. In the first 5-10 minutes, we talk about what's going on in the area, and then we get right to the magic. We don't take breaks, and it seems we almost always run out of time. Everyone participates in some way, whether it is performing, workshopping an effect to get feedback (we usually limit it to two people per week), discussing the latest book, or discussing ideas on performances.
Everyone in the group feels comfortable performing. There isn't any politics. Our goal is to have fun with magic. We usually have between 10-15 people attend a meeting, which is ideal. Sometimes we have had as many as 23, but that is unusual. Even if only 8 or 9 people show up, the time flies while everyone performs. I belong to another club which is larger, but it is always the same four or five guys who are willing to do anything performance-wise, and they also take a 30 minute break. Both have their advantages (the larger group sponsors lectures), but the S.A.M. is way more fun. |

Wow that club sounds like a lot of fun. Usually our business portion of the mtg takes at least 30 mins.

Our club is awesome (we have a nice mix of full time pros, and full time hobbyist, and young card guys.) with about 10 to 20 showing up on any giving night
We meet once a month at a local retirement home (we trade shows for the residence for use of the meeting facilities) and have a summer potluck and a Christmas potluck with white elephant gift exchange. we usually have 3 lectures a year and a "normal" meeting is usually us performing magic for each other and taking cheap shots at each other. We recently started doing more "learning time" to start meetings. But the main thing is we have fun - people almost always bring refreshments and we laugh a lot and support each other even more.

Hi Brian, would your assembly happen to be the Utah Valley Magic Club? I've heard you guys are a fun club! That's the emphasis in our Seattle club, too. Because everyone tries performing, we've had a lot of our guys start performing in public, which is way more fun than performing for a bunch of magicians (even if the magicians are all a bunch of fun guys).
For those who have clubs that put way too much emphasis on business meeting stuff, try talking to your officers and tell them what you want. We send out a monthly newsletter that has business stuff listed in it, as well as local magic performances and magic-related tv programs coming up for the month. That way, we can spend so little time talking about business. If we spend more than 10 minutes on business matters, someone will make a motion to end the business portion of the meeting, it gets a 'second,' a vote, and then we start having fun. If we did an hour business meeting, no one would show up until the second hour. Keep it fun! Then your club will grow! |

SAM Assembly #26 (Rhode Island) meets the first Tuesday of every month from September through June at the American Legion hall on Legion Way in Cranston. In July and August the board of governors prepares the calendar and budget for the following year. Like other clubs we have full time pros, several semi-pros, recreational, and young magicians.
Because Rhode Island is so small we draw several members and guests from southern and southeastern Massachusetts and eastern Connecticut. A typical calendar year will consists of 3-4 lectures, a holiday party/show, a couple off-beat creative/member performance meetings, and end the year with a magic contest - complete with cash prizes. Workshops and other learning opportunities precede each meeting and a monthly newsletter keeps members and friends informed. Anyone interested in attending a meeting or becoming a member can visit our web site (www.rismmagic.org) for more information, or can send a PM to me here on the Café. Jeff Smith |
