Hello all,
Of the school and college shows I've done, a technical rider seems expected and followed up on. I've been finding that my corporate clients (who are smaller companies & plan everything in-house) seem to not be too familiar with riders as they don't book entertainment on a regular basis. My rider is very basic, simple staging and sound are the biggest things (and hard to screw up). Yet, instead of being viewed as a guideline & tool for a successful show, it seems to be overwhelming for some reason. Almost as if they don't want to make a mistake, when the whole point of it is to make sure they can focus on the experience of the event. And, I find myself calling or visiting the venues directly to ensure that my show can be accomplished within the space or with the equipment at hand. I'm either not doing something right, or there is an opportunity to tighten up the processes I'm using. Does anyone have any tips on how to handle & communicate this more clearly? |

Dave I hear you. ok well I read you LOL
yes I agree with you that corporate shows as well as school shows don't seem to understand the concept of the enertainer needing a few simple things that are usually readily found either at the school or at the venue. here is what I have done to adjust my tech rider and seems to have made a huge impact on my clients as I have seen a big differece since the change many years ago. first I used to send a standard tech rider with bullet points of what I needed. however some time ago I changed the whole concept. what I now have is a tech rider which I say is really is a guide to help me serve them below is the actual text I now use Hilarious Magic of Sam Sandler DEAFinitely Magic Tech Rider Thanks for hosting my inspirational Magic show. We look forward to entertaining you and your school and your community. It will be a fun time enjoyed by all. Before I go any further I want to be honest with you. I HATE contract riders, and I know that you most likely don’t enjoy them as well. But they are needed and they serve a purpose. I see this as a way to help make my visit to your School the most productive and hassle free for both of us. It allows me to convey the needs that will help ensure a successful event for you, me, and those attending the show. I am coming to your school to serve you and your community. Here are a few items that will go a long way in helping me do just that. Let’s call it what it really is – A guide that will help me and my assistant serve you better! So I want to say thank you in advance for your help in meeting these needs, as it will help me and my team do a better job serving you and making our visit to your school the most successful it can be. Sam Sandler America’s only full-time Deaf illusionist I then list the needs and other instructions below. I have found that making this a single separate page and with text as I put it seems to make a much bigger impact on the school or client. I will also say that one of the bullet points says to please have these things completed prior to our arrival as this will help ensure that we can start the show on time. hope this info helps you. sam

If you'd like, I'd be happy to take a look at your rider and offer specific suggestions. I'm working nationally and when I fly in, everything has to be there and right or the show can't go on. Perhaps I can help you with phrasing and offer some ideas that will ease the concerns your clients are having. Let me know if I can be of service. Tom |

Thanks for the info guys. I'm definitely going to be going back and doing some editing. Tom, I will definitely take you up on that offer. I've got a busy couple of weeks lined up, so I'll be sure to reach out to you soon. Thanks again
