Corvids are very smart birds, and that was an amazing display. Of course, as Tom points out, it pales in comparison to the tasks that primates carry out on a daily basis, but that's a whole other story. Assuming everything is as it seems, this is a very long chain of steps for a bird, and it seems to have pieced them together very quickly.
Fun to watch.

I never knew crows were that smart. Now I know where the phrase "smart as a crow" comes from.

The late Brandon Lee would agree that the crow is indeed smart.

I wonder how the larger raven stacks up against the crow- mentally.

I saw a documentary called 'murder of crows' awhile back (the term 'murder' as in 'group'; and I think the clip comes from that same documentary, especially since New Caledonian crows were featured). Crows have a number of vocal expressions, and not everything is about food. Like Bob, I also talk to the crows, but I havent got their clicking sounds down yet. They also have 'families', where an auntie may on occasion temporarily take card of her sister's chicks. No, we can't compare them to primates ... but its kind of amazing what such a small brain can do. Lynn

It a special species from the SW Pacific known for it's tool making and problem solving abilities. They are pretty amazing. Common crows are smart but the kind in the video are way above them. They not only use tools, they manufacture them. They have skills that even some primates, including chimps, haven't mastered. |

I love crows and enjoy watching them.
I remember once reading about an experiment that scientist did to see if crows remembered faces. The crows were fitted with GPS or something like it and would have someone with a mask scream and throw things at the birds. Later "the same person" would appear in areas where a particular bird was and behavior was observed that the crows did indeed not forget people who had been mean to them. The same worked for those who had been nice to them by the birds behavior. On another note I always found it amazing by the "mobbing" behavior of crows when they spot a flying predator and put out the hue and call for others to join in the harassment to scare the intruder away. Team work! |
