Hi there,
My Rocky the Raccoon has started to get a few holes in the end where there are gaps in the springs.. Its one of the newer ones that weren't made very well (I haven't used it very much but noticed the holes today) .. so I was searching to see if there are any available any more and came across this "As Seen on TV" style Rocky Raccoon, calling itself "Arthur the Raccoon". Has anyone seen or used these Rocky Raccoon style puppets, are they any good quality wise? The web site says the following which makes it sound better: NOTICE - THE ORIGINAL "ROCKY" IS NO LONGER MADE This Raccoon is not the Original "Rocky" Brand! The New One (we now call "Arthur") has: Stronger Spring, inner covering inside fur to make it more durable, Longer Body For Easier Handling. It is IMPROVED and Much More Durable! Unfortunately as of writing this message they are supposed to be in stock Jan 2014.. its now Feb, and there is no contact button on the site. But I thought I'd ask to see if this is the go to now for a Rocky Raccoon.. otherwise I'll have to try and source a second hand one I guess? Thanks for the help everyone, |

Over the years I have picked up a few from that big inline auction place or local magic club auctions.
Lately I have been using a fox. Not the one commonly sold. As this one has feet and a not so strong spring, which I prefer. It was a one of a kind sample purchased perhaps 6 years ago. Harris Have puppets will travel

I have checked out those threads most are quite old. There doesn't seem to be anyone currently making Rocky raccoons. Magic makers only has an out of stock reality raccoon. Everyone else I have checked is also out of stock. There doesn't seem to be any reviews for the new Arthur raccoon though which is why I am asking.

Looks like Arthur is made by the same company that made Rocky, they just wanted to make some improvements. Consider Arthur to be Rocky Raccoon Version 2.0.

As Pwolverine mentioned, a common problem have with any brand of Rocky is the hide eventually rubbing away from where fingers manipulate it. I keep old worn out Rocky's just for this reason. Cut a patch of hide from the old one, sew it into place over the worn out area of the latest one and you're ready to go. Since that patch of fur is where your hand/fingers are going to be holding Rocky, they won't show. The fur doesn't even have to match colors.
On a side note, I see many performers using the same routines for Rocky. David Williamson's routine, sometimes word-for-word. Please stop doing that. There are so many other ways you can use a spring animal to entertain. There are thousands of puppet routines available, many can be adapted to spring puppets. In my lecture notes (Rocky Workshop) I show how to convert a dog toy into a spring animal. If you have an off-brand spring animal (not made by Magic Masters), they are still usable if upgraded. It is a shame that Magic Masters stopped making them, they were by far the best out there. I worked at Magic Masters in the late 80's and saw how they were manufactured. Impressive. |

I agree, that it would be nice if folks came up with something different.
Developing new material, is one reason I do puppetry workshops. When I teach, it seems to develop my creativity box(es) in my brain. Thinking outside the spring.... and asking "what box, I don't need a stinking box...." Harris who not only dances to the beat of a different drummer, He sometimes becomes his own orchestra....

Dolly wood still sells a rocky type spring animals. They sell a rocky junior and a normal rocky. I believe dolly wood is where the first rocky came from. I could be wrong my opinion.
