I realize there might be a pretty small audience for this, but what the Hades...
http://www.feynmanlectures.info/flp.html This is a link to The Feynman Lectures on Physics, online, in their entirety. It's a beautiful HTML version (not some bootleg PDF scan), that was reformatted expressly for online reading. For those who don't know, Richard Feynman was gifted in many ways: as a Nobel prize winning physicist, as a raconteur, and as a teacher. He put these Lectures together for the freshman/sophomore class at Caltech in the early 60s. It was the only intro class he ever taught. The Lectures went on to influence generations of physicists. Despite their age, I think some of the explanations are still the best I've ever seen. For example, the chapter on energy -- and the section "What is energy?" in particular -- is absolutely killer. This section is non-technical, and I think it's pretty accessible to a general audience. (Those aspiring to build self-generating generators might be interested in the section on thermodynamics: chapters 44 to 46, and especially section 44-4, "the efficiency of an ideal engine.") When I was a wee lad, these volumes went for around $100. Now they're free. I suppose I should have waited 20 years. |

I also have the the Feynman lectures on my bookshelf and I used to have the selected recordings someone had done of the lectures as well on cassette tape. I've been a huge Feynman fan since I read the books of collected stories about him.

Very nice. I first heard of Feynman in the 70s. When cable television arrived in Alberta, PBS had the most fabulous programming and it was there that I first saw him and heard him speak.
Cool.

Feynman was one of my heroes. My Physics teacher back in New York used to rave about him. I read "Surely you're joking Mr. Feynman" at his suggestion. My favorite anecdote of his was "Who stole the door at the frat house?" He was a great man, and thanks for the link.

I loved "Surely you're joking Mr. Feynman." Passed it on to my Dad.

There was a recent docudrama about Feynman researching the O-ring failures in the Challenger disaster. In a brilliant display of physics before a hearing in front of a lay audience, he showed how the material which was supposedly impervious to freezing temperatures was in fact brittle in a glass of ice water on his desk! Feynman explained physics for all levels of people. I never stayed in Physics but remember his lecture notes very well. Lynn

“Science is the belief in the ignorance of experts.”
