I prefer magic effects with simple themes, not wanting to risk confusing observers with less than focused attention. When I know that I have them ”in the palm of my hand” I might shift to multi-phase effects involving several spectators.
The question is what effects are simple but can set the stage for later effects if the need arises? I have searched my memory and notes of effects I performed for business owners not expecting magic at all that might be adapted to borrowed coins. I offer three different simple approaches and would like feedback as to which would be the most impactful in a lay person’s mind – even one not paying full attention. No gaffs. Both hands are displayed clean before and after. A) While showing both hands empty you get a volunteer to drop a coin onto your left palm. You cover this with your right hand and wiggle your thumbs. The right is lifted to reveal the coin is gone! Both hands are displayed front and back. The right covers the left once more and the action repeated. When the right hand lifts the coin is back on the left palm once more B) A borrowed coin is dropped on the table and covered with one hand while the other is placed palm down several inches away. Wiggle the thumbs. When the hands are lifted the coin has transported to beneath the other hand. C) Two different size coins are borrowed. A Volunteer Assistant selects one. It is placed in their hand and the fist held against their heart. You close your hand over the other coin and wiggle your thumb. When both hands are displayed the coins have traded places. Obviously, depending on the response you can return the coin(s) or use them in a more complicated effect. Personally, I would never do more than one of these “quickies” in a row. Which seems the best? Would you decide “on the fly” – if so, what would prompt your choice? Are any of these “too simple” to serve the intended purpose? All comments welcome.

I assume you have methods to accomplish these three effects?
Effect C) is similar to copper and silver in the spectator's hand, an effect I've been successfully performing for over 40 years, although the effect is made possible by the two coins being the same size. I don't know how you would do it with two different size coins. (Roth has effect where he uses two coins of different sizes, but does something clever, which I can't remember what it was.) I've done it with a borrowed penny and dime, those two coins being similar in size. Effect C) requires cooperation on the part of the spectator, whereas A) and B) only require the spectator to watch, but anything that happens in the spectator's hand is always more powerful than "eye candy." |

On first reading and thought, I like B
It could stand alone. My second thought it would be just as "easy" for the coin to be changed to say mint. And as you write wiggle your thumbs and both hands are really empty If you desire, later the mint could be the start of ??? Been busy with regular work and last week rehearsals for valentine show run this weekend. Also like your one handed stuff, said Nigel, the puppet that rocks and talks. Harris

Yes, Ray -- though some moves are "situational" -- only used when the conditions are ideal. All of these effects are meant for spectators who might not know you are a magician or are about to perform an effect. There may be other methods for each effect -- up to the creativity of the reader. Most of my years I have used objects other than coins: stones, buttons, erasers, dinner mints, etc.
Might work, Harris -- but then you have taken away the "borrowed coin" -- how do you return it? If you get the desired response I would then get permission to "morph" their coin and then use another method for the Transformation. If your Puppet can hold a coin, A and B methods can be combined for a "one hand" Transportation.

I have started to read your book. Love the idea of finding other hands.
I like the way you think and write. I am as much impressed with great creators as well as those that have a much firmer hand on putting it in print. Much appreciated by Harris

He meant "eBook" - in his case a partially finished one called "One Hand Clapping" with effects for a one-handed magician (his is disabled with a puppet on it).
I have dozens of eBooks that I send to folks all the time - even sell a few ;-) Now that I am no longer a "Share Provider" for my dad I might get some more finished. Just send me your interests to gusarimagic@comcast.net. I know you will provide the mandated feedback. My only published "performance magic" books are "T.U.C. Appreciation" and "Ball, Cup and Me" and "Magic Awareness* another called "Four Play" has been pulled by me for revision into four separate eBooks. there are 35 other published books on other themes -- mostly short stories and poems. Several are on metaphysical themes that include perceptions of magic such as divination: "Phinominal Progengics" and "Fain, Faire, Sooth" and "DIvinunity"
