A bizarre affair

Also the year the Ice Cream Cone was invented.
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

What a cluster that one turned out to be. Strange times by modern standards. That was the same year that the Milwaukee Athletic Club, which still exists, won gold in the Tug Of War, which was an actual event for 5 or 6 Olympic games.

1904: New York City. A woman is arrested for smoking a cigarette in an automobile. “You can’t do that on Fifth Avenue,” the arresting officer says.

Undoubtedly! The double whammy of automobile pollution and cigarette smoke that was plaguing the nation called for drastic action. It was a matter of life and breath.

Ironically in 1904 the automobile was considered a godsend because expert scientists had created mathematical models showing that in just a few short years there would be some many horses on the streets of America the entire country would be covered in 4 feet of horseshit.

I'm still trying to figure out how Lorz, who hitched a ride on a car for 10 of the miles, only finished about 16 minutes ahead of the eventual winner!

One of the more problematic sport spectacles in American history took place at the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis, which included the third modern Olympic Games. Associated with the Games was a curious event known as Anthropology Days organized by William J. McGee and James Sullivan, at that time the leading figures in American anthropology and sports, respectively. McGee recruited Natives who were participating in the fair’s ethnic displays to compete in sports events, with the “scientific” goal of measuring the physical prowess of “savages” as compared with “civilized men.” This interdisciplinary collection of essays assesses the ideas about race, imperialism, and Western civilization manifested in the 1904 World’s Fair and Olympic Games and shows how they are still relevant.

The World Series was also cancelled in 1904 because the NL NY Giants manager John McGraw loathed American League president Ban Johnson and McGraw considered the AL a minor league.

Actually, Marvel did a comic of that one.

http://blog.paxholley.net/2012/03/08/loo......tations/

As you see, a lot of it went into Disney's film "Return To Oz" although they brought Dorothy back whereas the original story had "Pip" who had a secret of his own.
