Hey there guys,
Do any of you guys have any experience using these? It's an interesting system to memorize a deck of cards but I can't seem to visualise a lot of the pegs, like sight, fight, Tuesday and Thursday...etc. Any help you guys could provide on how you got around this would be much appreciated. I didn't really like Dominic O'brien's system much and there was an overlap in the one Lorayne describes. |

You already have a peg system in your own head
Get a piece of paper, shuffle the pack, take out each card in turn at random, and write down the first thing that springs to mind that you think the card is like either by shape, colour, name, whatever... Do the whole pack Now look at your list and see if there are any interesting patterns there. There should be. Build your own system around the patterns and names that your brain is already making naturally. There is no 'right' or 'best' way |

Bob Farmer's system, with a few of my own substitutions, (Yes, I found Tuesday and Thursday a bit too abstract) cut my time in learning a memorized deck in HALF. Having the card value come before the suit in the mnemonic was a stroke of genius and makes memorizing the list MUCH easier than other systems.
But don't take my word for it . . . His system is on the Be a Genius site which is located here: http://members.aol.com/beagenius/features.html Jack Shalom

Landmark if possible could you give a few ideas for your substitutions?
Bev, that sounds like a great idea but could you give a few examples as well? All I get from staring at the ace of hearts...is the ace of hearts... |

Make it COMPLETELY RIDICULOUS First think of what the phrase sounds like spoken in one mouthful as if it were abstract - see if it SOUNDS like anything Think of the shape of the number and the shape of the suit. Try and put them together. What do they look like? etc You need to play tricks on yourself and play some free association games with each card - WHATEVER comes up first you should try and stick with The other thing with mnemonics (IMHO) is that if a particular phrase just isn't sticking CHANGE IT. If you keep getting a card wrong CHANGE IT TO WHAT YOU KEEP PEGGING IT TO (as long as it isn't an already existing card) Try and follow what your brain is ALREADY trying to do with the numbers, symbols and shapes. If you can't 'get creative' instantly, then work on getting creative, try very hard, write notes, 'brainstorm' - do whatever it takes to get more mentally visual The reason being - you need to stimulate your brain and imagination in this way to get REALLY good at mnemonic systems. If you're not 'instantly brilliant' with creative and crazy free association, then PRACTICE. Practice walking down the street, when you're looking at a magazine, watching TV...start getting your brain to associate things into groups, elements, forms....imagine that you're going to be on Whose Line Is It Anyway TOMORROW and you have to be really good at 'coming up with stuff instantly' You need to stimulate your brain to think more visually. Apart from menemonics, thinking like this is fun! And we could all do with being a little more creative, Just a ramble. P.S. Talking of ridiculous, as a 'peg' I use Ace Farts. |

I'm not familiar with Farmers system, but I can vouch for Harry Lorrayne's.
His is quite good, and the peg system is easily set up by a phonetic alphabet. So if you forget the exact word used for the particular peg, you can easily get a major idea as to what the word is. Appart from that I pretty much second many of the opinons being echoed here about the methods of brainstorming and plain out abstract thoughts needed to be used to have the system develop for your benifit. I also recommend practice in everyday life.
