Mark your calendars for May 1, 2, 3, 2014 for the 23rd Annual Battle of Magicians. One of the best little conventions in the country.
Sure you can go to bigger conventions with more people, more shows, higher hotel bills, registration costs and more travel costs,.......But why. Most East Coast magicians can drive to Canton, Ohio in 12 hours or less. The hotel still has $95 rooms with free parking and free wifi. Registration is under $100. There is a closeup and stage contest with big money prizes ($1601). A great hotel early show, six lectures, a great closeup show, a super stage show in the restored 1926 vaudeville Palace Theater, dealers to satisfy your need and empty your wallet (but you will have more to spend there with cheaper rooms and registration) and a free closing party with buffet food. Look at www.battleofmagicians.com for more information. Rates go up on April 15th. Richard

Last year was my first battle and I registered this year as soon as registrations opened. Can't beat the price and it's a great convention.

I've been going for about 8 yrs. this is always such a laid back fun convention. Most conventions, if you get something to eat you miss out on something. At the battle there is plenty of time for everything. The wife is even happy with all the shopping within spitting distance of the hotel. See you all there!!!

Just booked....the legendary Ward Hall. Master of the 10 in 1 sideshow. Ward still runs one of the last remaining sideshows in the country. He will do a formal presentation one night and be available the whole convention for jackpotting. He is a master story teller but don't plan on a brief conversation with Ward. He can quickly tie you up for many enjoyable hours.
He will also premier his newly printed autobiography "King of the Sideshows" and have copies available to purchase and get signed. Go to www.battleofmagicians.com. to get more details on this great little convention. Richard

Hi Richard:
It looks like OHIO is fast-becoming one of the HEAVY-HITTERS in the Magic Convention World! I talked to some of my magician friends about the GREAT Magic Conventions that they have been to in OHIO recently this past weekend during the 35th Annual Abbott's Close-Up Convention, and they raved about the great time they have had there in Ohio with fellow Magii!!! One of the performers this past weekend was KINOA HARBOTTLE, and I WAS VERY IMPRESSED WITH HIS SKILL WITH SLEIGHT OF HAND WITH COINS!!! I see that KAINOA is going to be a performer at the 23rd Annual Battle of Magicians, and those magicians who have never seen him are in for a real treat!!! He's a very nice guy, and is quite approachable and helpful, too!!! Congrats on a great talent lineup.....those Magicians who attend will have a great time. |

Tim Dermer does an excellent job with this convention! Just to see the organ come out of the floor during the one show, while may not be magic, is thrilling! ! !

This is a great get together. I performed last year, both close up and stage, absolutely loved it, everybody was so friendly. The downtown theatre was a real treat.

He is not officially on the Schedule but Tim as told me that Tim should be there the entire convention to talk about his autobiography and answer questions.

Last years convention I liked. This years I did not The main show was nothing but corny comedy, last year I think was all magic acts but one, their year, it was all comedy acts but one. I wanted to see magic, not 2nd rate comedy acts. And to top it off, the main act that was scheduled, did not appear. Blahhhhhhhhhhh Big let down

Ok. I understand what you are saying about the disappointment of the failure of one act to appear. Jason Purdy did a great job of filling in after only finding out two days before the convention started. His illusions were all top rate and smoothly and cleanly presented. We also had the organist cancel less than 2 hours before show time. Also one of the main closeup acts and lecturers broke his arm before the convention. Michael Durand did a great job lecturing, performing, and Emceeeing.
I would agree that maybe it was not as strong in magic as last year but it is hard to do do that every year. Jamal Keyes does good magic but it is his movement and mannerisms tare what sells to an audience. The opening act Dave Chandler did a very good classic manipulation act. Fred Moore did some good magic but with a comedic presentation. Dana Daniels is a top class act and mc and always delivers a solid performance. Jim Barber has years of experience and a solid 25 minute set. If you would have seen the public show on Sunday, you would agree how strong these acts are for the lay audience. Everyone registered high. And truthfully, if it were not for the paying public, we could not afford to bring in these acts and still keep the registration under $100. As the guy manning the broom and pushing the boxes, I can tell you first hand how hard everyone work through all the challenges that were thrown at us this year with act problems. Next year will be the 25th anniversary of the convention. We are all ready planning for some of the acts for next year. I hope you had a good time and sorry that you felt the Saturday show was not up to your expectations. Richard

I have no doubt you and others break their backs for the convention. I was at the Sunday show, not the Saturday one. To me, it was a comedy show, and not a magic show. One guy did the bowling ball suitcase routine. First two acts just played with silks, the guy who was there on Thursday, maybe he's a legend in the magic fraternity, but It seems he was just there plugging his own book. I greatly appreciate all the hard work you guys put into it, but to be truthfull, here is all I liked about it. I liked the guy from Ohio who did a demo on some of the stuff he had for sale, 1 or 2 tricks Harry Allen had for sale, At the headliner show, I laughed at Jamal for about 30 seconds, but his routine looked more like a ballet show, he mainly danced. If I want to see someone shake their butt, I want them to be female and age 18-25, not some old man. The one guy who was bald, he was funny for about 30 seconds, I think that's the one who had the 2 other guys dress up as women. I viewed all the acts but the last one as comedy acts. The guy who chaned is clothes from young to bald, that was memorable, the last act , the fill in, I agree, that was top rate all around, that's what I was expecting the whole show. I felt the whole show last year was all first class. This year, Ehhhhhhhhhhh. The puppet guy was ok at first , but once again, after 2 min, it got boring quick. I like the puppet guy from Canton better, that guys puppet routine was interesting the whole way thru, I think he was at the church show or something in akron that Mr Dermer runs. And all the hosts and volunteers like yourself are helpful and friendly ( which in todays world that's a treat in itself ). A lot of the stuff, I felt was like a Seniors convention, maybe that is the main age group that attends, I don't know. People want to see young people perform. But, a lot of these guys I think should be paying Mr Dermer, and not the other way around, LOL. I also think the convention drags on to long. I'll give it a try again next year, but if its like this years, I doubt I'll be back. You guys obviously put a lot of time into it, maybe Tim can call 1 out of 10 of the people who filled out the cards, and ask them what they liked and what they didn't. Disclaimer: I am not a promoter, if there is anything I hate is customers telling me how to run my business, they have no idea what they are usually talking about, and I may be in the same class, LOL. Just trying to add some constructive criticism.

Quote: Actually, I was sorry to see it end. Sure it's a couple of late nights but all conventions have that. It's part of the fun. It's only 2 days plus a night before and for the price, it's the best time around. I think the comedy plays well with layman and it does move the act along.
I also think the convention drags on to long Life is to serious most of the time, and if I can get an hour of comic relief once in awhile, I feel a lot better. Some do comedy better than others but I think all of the magic was good and with a few exceptions, well presented. Sure, there were some down spots in the contests but that's part of what the contest is about. It's the best place to get some experience and reduce the stage fright jitters. With the exception of a long lag time between the last lecture and the dealer show, the convention is well paced. But on the other hand, some time has to be given to dealers to be fair to them. All in all, there was a lot of magic going on and I don't object to some comedy being thrown in. Besides that, it's a great time to talk with old friends, and meet new ones. I for one will be among those attending next year. It was time well spent.

This really proves that opinions can vary incredibly widely regarding the same event. The Battle of Magicians is a convention that allows a participant to get out of it what he/she puts into it. The lecturers were all VERY accessible and friendly -- ALL weekend. A convention that boasts lecturer names like Michael Dardant, Kainoa Harbottle, Tomas Medina, Cameron Francis, The Moores and Jamahl Keyes is "top shelf" -- by definition. What a great variety -- something for everyone! And ... the presentations by Marty Hahne and Ward Hall, while different in content/presentation, were very entertaining and rich with history. This "conference goer" took the opportunity to talk to nearly all of the performers and even exchanged some numbers and now consider them friends. In addition, just chatting with the ladies at the registration desk, the hotel staff, and even "Guido" contributed to the feeling of "home" that this convention offers. Last, the dealers hall is excellent -- can't imagine a nicer group of dealers. OK, they were probably there to sell something, but I was in several rooms where there was just fun "brick and mortar" type of conversations going on -- quality and class! Again, "top shelf." I'll close like I started -- this convention is one where you get out of it what you put into it -- whatever you invest, you get back much, much more. And, I also love how the format encourages our next generation of magicians through both the contests and just general welcomed involvement. I wouldn't miss next year for anything. And no, I am not affiliated with the Battle of Magicians in any way. I am just a regular "conference goer" with a high number on my badge. I didn't even get the conference rate for my hotel room and I still found incredible value in the weekend.
Frank P.S. As for the headliner show at the Palace Theater, everyone that I was sitting around was having a great time. Again, incredible value. |
