This looks really good and super visual. I always love when grand stage illusions can be shrunken down to everyday handheld items.
http://www.penguinmagic.com/p/S17567 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ulYDsomb_00 I wonder how much time would be needed to set aside for arts and crafts to construct the box, but for the lazy folks he's selling the gimmicked box and download on his website as an option: http://www.briankennedymagic.com/insertion/4583066257 |

This does looks like a fun trick.
Does anyone here have this yet whose willing to share some feedback? The only "reviews" I can find on this so far are the blurbs from the product pages, impressive as they are. Kenn |

Here's a review.
This is what penguin magic states: Easy to do Instantly resets Fully self contained Multiple routines No sleight of hand required Perform surrounded Extremely visual Spectator can Put the cards through I hate to burst your bubble, but no sleight of hand required is definitely a false statement. The sleight you have to do however is a sleight that every beginner will be able to do, but if I knew this beforehand I would have been able to work this out myself, I was just flabbergasted because I could only come up with a method with that sleight. So I feel a bit mislead by the add, but penguin made this add, Brian Kennedy's website doesn't state that the trick is sleightless. So you have to blame penguin on that one and not the creator of the trick. Now that that has been said it's time to discuss the effect itself, I will leave out of consideration that the add was false and just discuss the effect itself. Easy to do - The trick is very easy to perform, once you've made the box you'll be performing this with the least amount of practice. Instantly resets - The trick instantly resets, however it will definitely be suspicious if you perform it for the same group of people again. I'm not sure if I can say why because I don't know if that counts as exposure. If you have a walk around gig I would advice you to make multiple boxes. If this exposes too much of the method I will change this text, but I want to be honest in my reviews. Fully self contained - This is the biggest plus for me, this trick does not take up additional pocket space. You just need a deck of cards and the box they are in. Multiple routines - Maybe it is because I'm mainly focused on mentalism and used to read some very good routines, but the routines aren't that strong or special. Do not buy this trick for the routines, needless to say the illusion is definitely worth the price but I would develop my own routine because I think the intro can be much stronger. Perform surrounded- definitely true. There are 2 points in the effect where you have to cover your angles, but these will be so short that even a beginner with hardly any presentational or magic skills will be able to cover these up. Once you're in the end position everything looks insanely clean, they can even see the card "go through". The only thing I wouldn't emphasise too much is the top part of the card, but when handled casually this will fly by any spectator. Extremely visual - What you see is what you get! Once the cards have gone through it really looks that clean! They can even take pictures or film it, because after that one sleight there is nothing to backtrack, not even on camera. This is what makes the effect definitely worth it's price. Spectators can push the cards through - I think the best part isn't even stated here. The best part is they feel some restistance when they push the first card through! I really like this and this is an added convincer that what they see is really happening. Video quality - This has an home-made video feel. This really doesn't bother me, because I buy effects for the effect and not because there is a fancy pancy video that comes with it but if you have problems with this then it's up to you. My opinion is that you're missing out if you wouldn't buy an effect because of the video quality. Instructions - Now something that makes my OCD-senses tingling. The guy is talking about CM while he actually means MM. Besides that the instructions are very clear, a bit too clear to my liking, but you will definitely be able to follow this and create the gimmick without any problem. In my opinion his explanations are a bit dull and boring, but for some this might work. Examinable - No, but you're the performer and you're in control of your audience, I would not let you be set back by this but if you really feel like you're being chased practive a deck switch and perform it with the card box and you're good to go. The bottom line - The effect really looks great, if you're creative and have some experience you will be able to create a beautiful routine with this. If you're a beginner you will definitely get away with it, but take a moment to come up with a good routine in order to do the trick justice(again maybe it's just the mentalist in me who loves to have a bit more then just the trick). Easy to make this is really easy to make and once you get the hang of it you will be making them really fast! Rating: 7/10 Don't be set back by this, I'm just always critical when looking at things and I hated the fact that a sleight was involved while otherwise stated and I thought the routine itself could me much more powerfull but if you ask me if this trick is worth its price, it definitely is! For 14,99 $ this is definitely a no brainer and I recommend you to buy this! The effect itself just looks great and clean, it's up to the performer to transform the effect into a miracle. |

Thanks for the detailed review... one interesting thing to note is in the video, it also says "no sleight of hand" so I'm not sure that Penguin just threw that in there since it looks like they didn't produce the video.
One question, that I couldn't tell from the video, when the "windows" to the box are opened, can you clearly see the signature on the "penetrated" card? In the video, it seemed like the angles of the piercing cards obstructed that view. |

Yes, the spectators signature is visible by opening the card box with the normal flap, you're able to let them look into the card box and show them their signature. Ir's the only part of the effect that is a bit awkward but you will still be able to get away with it. Hope this helps!

And good you mention it, I just thought it was a statement from penguin magic and overlooked the phrase in the video, my apologies to penguin for blaming them for making a false statement.

I made the gimmick and played around with it tonight... its what I thought was going on, but very clever.
Overall its a very good looking effect and easy to perform. The handling can be a bit wobbly at times because there's so many slits in the box, but I think after some practice that will be resolved. The arts and crafts isn't too bad- took me about 20 min or so, but I took my time. If you were impressed with the trailer, I would say its worth the download as you get what you see. |

Can someone please comment on if this is the same or even a better method than Transfix? http://www.penguinmagic.com/p/4016
