I'm a prop man. I use a lot of props and I don't give one thought or care if they make sense in the normal world. I'm just having fun out there and I want my audiences to laugh and have fun too. We perform in a world of magic. Nothing should make sense anyway. (Or is this just my lazy man's thinking???)

I think you make a good point, Tommy. I mean how many magic wands do you see in the real world? When you're entertaining children, you're ushering them into an imaginary fantasy world.

It is a fantasy world. The key is, a Tommy mentioned, entertainment. If they are having fun, that is really all that matters. I like the props as it lets me concentrate on the presentation more than the technical aspects of doing something. Sure, I do some things that require manual techniques but not that many.
If you are doing your job and having fun with the audience, they will remember you and not the props. But whatever works for you. I think sometimes we overthink way too many things. Richard

Someone, somewhere, came up with this "rule" that you shouldn't do that. I DO display some props on my side table during my shows. I don't have an assistant to bring each prop out to me. This allows the kids to see props during the show and "wonder" what they are for. It also adds some decoration an atmosphere. (Just my personal opinion again)

I'm with most people here. I'm a magician, and sometimes I have things that only a magicians would have. The Wicked Witch of the West had a crystal ball for no reason other than it was magical. I'm the same way (only better looking).
Go ahead, George, make a "crystal balls" joke. I dare ya! |

We should all do the show that we want to do. Just as we should all tell jokes that we find funny. If you enjoy showing the kids loads of cool toys, they'll love it. If you want to use minimal props and put all the focus on imagination, they'll love that too. The only rule is: don't let anyone persuade you that your approach is wrong, particularly if it works for you. Be true to yourself. You should never worry about what the audience might like. Do what YOU like and invite the kids into YOUR world.

One never knows who reads the Café.
I can't remember if I posted the following. A man searched magicians in my town and found contact information through the Café. His father who recently died was a magician. His desire was to find some one who was connected with magic and magicians who would use the props. I am now the proud owner of a tip over box and other props. Most I gave away at our last FCM local meeting. As I don't use animals/birds, I will use it with puppets Puppets, I guess could be considered props. My ukulele sometimes doubles as a puppet. I use a laminated, paper moving smile mask to have it start talking to the kids. To find what works for you, priceless. Thanks for sharing and being part of the solution here on the Café.

As for props, I think anything we bring on stage with us is a prop in some sense. The microphone itself can be a prop (see George Carl). Puppets are certainly props (as well as being characters in the story you are telling). I don't care if my props always have a perfect internal logic, as long as they make some sense in the context of the story I am telling in the show. |

I love watching classic bits like George Carl.
Mics and stand and cords and steps and tables and ...., even a stick ( with a nod to Jonathon Winters. )
