Growing up in a church that seemed to worship statues and icons, I hav never been 100% cofortable with using a Jesus silk. Leaving that church system many years ago as a teenager it took several years to get over that feeling driven into me as a youth. Now I explain everytime I use a Jesus silk that it is just an object to represent Jesus in my lessons to the class and it does not look like him. I have since had some silks made with a cross on them and use them more than a Jesus silk.
My real question is, when is someone going to make a more realistic Jesus silk. I am tired of the blue eyed white guy ones you find. Someone someday has to come up with one of him depicting a Jewish person of that time period. Someone with darker skin, and clothing from that time. I say this not because I want it to be more accurate in the description of Jesus because it is just a silk picture, just want to be more historically accurate. Any comments? |

Yes I have but I still think the skin color is right.

I'm more in favor of just using a silk that says "JESUS" rather than an image.

I agree Stephon that is why I had silks of the cross made up. But I haven't seen a silk that says "Jesus" on it as a stock item.

I have both Jesus image and Cross image (Don Townsend - 2012) silks. I discuss which one I will use with the Minister before performing. But only one Minister ever raised this with me, and I'd ordered the Cross silk by then anyway.
There are insufficient requests for a Jesus name silk for it to be a mainstream item. And it's worth bearing in mind that silks are currently being produced in dozens rather than hundreds due to the major cost and investment required. My last silk, OT woman, was only made in a batch of 12. Now if someone was prepared to finance the design, production and storage of any new silks then I'm sure our silk experts would be more than happy.

Sorry, but that looks more like Kronk off of "The Emperors New Groove" cartoon below...

Do those of you who "struggle" with Jesus silks also struggle with the great works of art that depict Jesus? This has never been an issue for me as I remember "flannelgraph Jesus" when I was a kid as well as the paintings in my Children's Bible such as Christ knocking on the door, etc. Click here to view attached image.

I have no issue with flannel graphs or classical Christian artwork (well, I do take issue that most artwork has depicted Jesus as Caucasian, semi-blond and/or effeminate, and anything other than of Jewish ethnicity - but I digress)...
My point is that I think there is a danger of "fairy tale-ing" Jesus and other REAL people and events by "caricaturing" them to the point that they look just like the make believe forms of entertainment. I'm constantly looking at whether what I'm doing is a visual aid to help understand (as flannel graphs certainly did) or am I creating extra visual clutter that distracts from the message, or worse, cheapens it by making it cartoony or anything less than the scripture intended. Admittedly, this is a concept that is difficult to convey in text.

I don't have an issue with it unless it will detract from my message.
Recently, Barry Mitchell described how to make graphics and words more effectively on silk via his Facebook Page and I believe on one of his recent DVD's. ...In this way, if you struggle with the idea of using a picture that represents Jesus, you could easily create a silk that is any size that uses the word "JESUS" or a cross or an empty tomb or a replica of the Ceiling of the Sistine Chapel or a silhouette of Moses or all 10 plagues of Eqypt, etc. |

Maybe Jesus looks more like his father.

I've made a few silks with words and some simple pictures on them - it's a good way to go if you are infront of a larger crowd.
My buddy Larry Mahan could get printable silk at one time that you feed thru your inkjet printer... http://www.dharmatrading.com/transfers/p......ers.html ...and he's had some success with making 8.5X11 sized silks. |
