For all of you interested in card cheating as it relates to string ensemble, here is a perfect one for you....
Magicana, in association with the Luminato Festival, is producing a new work titled, "Card Table Artifice" - ten pieces for string quartette, with live narration and card table artistry, inspired by the seminal text, The Expert at the Card Table. Here is a link for more information: http://www.magicana.com/performances/lum......rtifice/ And, here is a show description: In 1902, a card cheat – S. W. Erdnase (a pseudonym) – self-published what would become the seminal text for sleight-of-hand, The Expert at the Card Table. In 1992, inspired by that text and, oddly enough, the daily BBC broadcast of off-shore weather reports, renowned composer Gavin Bryars and Spanish poet and sculptor Juan Muñoz created A Man in a Room, Gambling, ten pieces for string quartet with accompanying narration. In 2014, David Ben, master sleight-of-hand artist, lifelong student of Erdnase, and card cheating, brought a new perspective to the Bryars-Muñoz collaboration. The result is Card Table Artifice, and is performed here by the Art of Time Ensemble (accompanied by Gavin Bryars), with live narration by R.H. Thomson, and card table artistry by David Ben. Setting the stage for Card Table Artifice will be Rob Zabrecky’s “TURN ON THE DARK!”, a 45-minute performance of the comically macabre. This show will be presented in Toronto on June 13, 14 2014 and is a World Premiere. |

That this Magicana project is obviously being done with Bryar's blessing makes it a treat for fans of Erdnase and his book - and for fans of the original Bryars/Munoz work....which frankly is a singular piece of brilliance.
Julie, what are the plans for sharing this work with a wider audience than just those at the centre of the universe? |

Come to Toronto to see the opening!
The new work, "Card Table Artifice" is very interesting as it does, indeed, build from the first version, "A Man in a Room, Gambling". David Ben approached Mr. Bryars about the possibility of revisiting the work for the Luminato Festival and Mr. Bryars agreed and was intrigued by David's interest in Erdnase. As the video in the link I shared outlines, David will introduce new narration based on The Expert at the Card Table, following his own exploration of Erdnase - and I can assure you, that alone is quite interesting! But, to have Gavin Bryars come to Toronto to play double bass with the Art of Time Ensemble at the world premiere, well, that is just too cool for words. Keep an eye out on Magicana's blog as we will share some insights about the new work, and the exciting developments around it. Cheers! |
