When we discuss the Penguin/Magic Makers Cups in the same context as the Johnson Cups, we are talking about apples and boxcars. You need to consider what the Penguin/Magic Makers cups are as opposed to the Johnson Cups, and their relative prices.
The Penguin/Magic Maker Cups are inexpensive copies (read KNOCKOFFS!) of the Paul Fox cups, which are no longer made, and are among the most desirable cups of the past century. They cost (street price) $75 - $99, depending on where you purchase them. The Johnson Cups are CNC machined, medium -priced, copies of the Paul Fox cups. They are available only in brass -- some people prefer copper -- and they cost $169 - $195 a set, roughly twice as much. For a person who can't afford the Johnson Cups, these cheaper cups will do just fine. But neither set will hold a candle to the Sherwood cups. But nobody can tell you which cups you should like. If you like working with three spun aluminum drinking cups -- go for it! :cups:

Greetings and Salutations,
Dittos to what Bill said. I had an opportunity to see and handle a set of copper MagicMaker/Penguin cups before I bought them, and they were rough but would serve me well for my intended purposes. I did negotiate what I thought was a fair price for the cups. See my earlier post. All things being equal, if you want to spend $100 or so on a good set of cups, get the Boscos from Harries. Nice cups, decent weight, good finish, old-world look. I'm sure other's will offer as good advise on other sets of cups. After the $100-range, the skies the limit. I prefer Gary Knight's Gazzo cups and Pete Biro's Gali Gali cups, both will set you back at least a couple hundred bucks. As with all things, you get what you pay for. My advise is to seek out advise here at The MagicCafe -- for there are knowledgeable cups workers and collectors here -- before you shell out $100 for a set of cups which do not have a built-in reputation. I've bought several sets of cups sight-unseen based on the advise and recommendations found on these threads and have been most pleased with my purchases. When I've gone against the grain of that advise I've been disappointed. As always, that's my $.02 (USD) worth. YMMV. Don't get too deep in your cups! I feel that I need to post this here also, even though I have posted it elsewhere. Please read this carefully.
For those who saw the post about the crack in the Penguin cup -- please read the following -- I made a horrible mistake. Update on the "crack" in the Penguin cup. March 15, 2004. I made an error. I decided to take another look at the damaged cup this morning and see exactly how bad the crack was. I was convinced that a crack like that could not have developed on its own. Well, I am happy to report that I simply goofed. There was a very small dent in the cup that caused a minor bulge from the inside -- not enough to effect the value of the cups. This, combined with an ill-placed hairline scratch and a smudge made the cup look like it had a crack in it. It doesn't. I'm sure I will be able to polish this out. On the bright side of things, Eric Bolander of Magic Makers, Inc. contacted me via e-mail and offered to replace the damaged cups. My hats are off to Eric and Magic Makers, Inc. for their diligence. I apolgize for any inconvenience this may have caused them. This would be an excellent first or even second set of cups for someone who is either beginning to get into cups and balls or who wants something that looks and handles like a professional cup, without spending their entire annual magic budget on cups. Not everyone is a cup addict like I am. :cups:

Looks like Penguin is selling these again. I think I might pick up a set. I'll feel much better beating these up.
On another note, I used to have a set of the Johnson Cups years ago but sold them when I bought a really nice set of copper cups. Anyway, they were $195 then. Now they're almost TWICE that price! While the Johnson cups were super sturdy, I always thought the mouth was a little narrow. Looking back though, I wish I would have held on to them. |
