Not sure if this is the correct forum??
But,besides the SAM and IBM I would like a monthly publication of whats new, who did it,supplies etc. Living approx 80 miles from any magic shops and no local magi makes learning a bit more of a challenge. |

If you are looking for magazines, Magic and Genii are two for this industry. This site is probably the best way to keep up to date.

There used to be a lot of great, high quality magazines like Apocalypse, Epilogue, Pall Bearers Review, Hierophant, Ibidem, New Tops & Phoenix, etc. Maybe these weren’t all published at the same time, and maybe it is just my imagination playing tricks on me, but it seems like there were many more magazines in past years than there are now. Are there similar magazines published now that I am unaware of, or is the magazine world basically limited to Magic and Genii?

I just thought of Channel One Mag. I'm not sure if it is monthly. It is the one that was the first to publish Anders Moden's Healed and Sealed. You could find it through an internet search.

I have been trying to find copies of "the crimp". I have heard its great, modern, funny and very "with it".
maybe e-bay is worth a look for older or back issue magazines. |

Up to date and modern may be what you seek, but do not overlook back-issues of many issues of magazines past. Sometimes they can be had for a song on ebay.

I agree, a fellow magician has let me borrow stacks of his old Magic magazines and going through the back issues has been like finding a pot of gold. The sections by John Racherbaumer are priceless!

I subscribe to both Genii and Magic. I would recommend them both. They have a nice blend of magic news, trick/DVD reviews, and magic history. At $4 ea per month it's a worthwhile investment.

There was also interesting information about LePaul, including his practice habits and his legendary ability with the pass. It gives you a pretty good sense of what magic was like 50 years ago. Really appealing stuff. Gary |

I am not a big fan of MAGIC magazine.
Altho they are doing a feature on my dad, so maybe I will after that. They're are some good historical pieces in it, at times. I think Genii is probably one of the better. Over all I believe TOPS was the best.

I'm a big fan of the Linking Rings as it contains a wealth of information and fortunately comes with your membership to IBM. It resembles a small book rather than a magazine and not only contains articles but informs magicians of upcoming conventions and what's going on in the magic community.
The others are good too although I don't get them that often but enjoy reading them. |

Genii has got to be the top magazine going right now. But Magic is also very good. I feel that Genii has more to offer for your hard earned cash.
The power is within us all...I'm just a little more full of it.

You can still get the tiny Abracadabra magazine from England, I have a bunch of old copies from the '50s as well, a bit short though.
Don't forget all the digital reprints of the old magazines, I just bought the Phoenix on CD, worth the money. Owen |

Hi Wanabe 1,
Genii has a great bargain on the 1999 back-issues. you may like to check that out at http://www.geniimagazine.com Again, in addition to the print magazines, you can also subscribe to some of the online magazines like "Online Visions" (http://www.online-visions.com), "Magic New Zealand" (www.watson.co.nz/ezine.html), and "Smoke & Mirrors" (http://www.KismetMagic.com) Nakul |

I agree with the posts in this forum about some of the older magazines.
I went to a tiny 'day of magic' in the UK last year and someone there was selling huge bundles of back issues of the Linking Ring for next to nothing. Have only skimmed, but there is some great stuff in there. Also Owen Daniel points out, a number of old mags can now be found on CD / DVD. I picked up a copy of the complete set of Jinx magazines from Houdini Magic at the Blackpool convention this Feb and paid something like £10 for it - over a thousand pages of scanned original pages with full indexing and a reasonably accurate search facility. Again - I only skim this occasionally, but on one of the first pages I stumbled across a threaded needles from mouth routine - certainly not the kind of material I was expecting! I can see myself referring to this a lot in the future. Thanks everyone for detail on the current magazines in issue - this might be worth a look in too. Riberts |
