The main ones aren't expensive at all and you can get many of them in e-book form at Lybrary.com
And in the 39 steps I already wrote about which ones you should start with. |

Trust me when I say, there is simply no better place to start than Bob Cassidy's Artful Mentalism Vol: 2 http://www.penguinmagic.com/p/3810 I could not even begin to list all of the material that you will learn from reading this book. There are ENTIRE acts that you could perform straight out of this book from beginning to end. Not just a list of tricks here and there, but entire acts. Bob explains not just HOW to perform these things, but the important aspect here is WHY. Why is this particular effect placed "here" during the show, as opposed to "here"? You mention you are on a tight budget. Save your money. Im going to do what my high school english teacher told me to never do, Im going to make and "ass" of you and "me" and assume you are young. Its summer time, maybe do some yard work around the neighborhood for extra cash. Ill never forget mowing my neighbors grass one summer when I was about 16, and saving up for Banacheks Psychological Subleties. First book I ever bought dealing with mentalism Don't save up 25.00 or 30.00 dollars and then go and spend it on the next "cool trick". This will most likely lead to disappointment and just a collection of tricks, in which you will simply place the thing in the back of the junk drawer. Hope this helps. Feel free to PM me for any questions! With a smile Matthew |

Zach,
I've seen your other post regarding what the difference is between mental magic and Mentalism. You are definetely on the right track and asking the right questions. While I can't answer that question as in depth as id like to at the moment (as I'm at work and on a quick break, typing this on my phone) I can say that that exact question is discussed in Bob's book. This is what I mean when I say, you're not just buying a book of random tricks. All the golden nuggets are in this book. I'll try and provide my humble two cents later in that post. Matthew |

Not only will Bobs book teach you everything you need to know but you could bench press it to get pecs like Arnie Schwarzenegger. It is the heaviest book I own and I have some hefty tomes. If you only ever buy one book on mentalism make in Bobs vol 2 fundamentals. In fact I would say only buy that book until you have studied it thoroughly. I am not kidding when I say that one book will comfortably keep you busy until you are at least 18 and even if you are still doing mentalism at 50 you will refer back to it regularly.

Great thread! While I perform strictly in the children/family magic markets, I love browsing some of the mentalism sections of the Café because I find that many of the contributors are advanced in the way they approach their performance as well as their business. I have learned a great deal by following the discussions and investigating the links that are often provided. This thread provides a great direction, which is where to start in 2014 (which is the same as it has been for many years, but I would. to have known that without this thread).
Zach - I am twenty. My brother (who is 17) and I started in magic a few years back and benefitted enormously from contributions provided on The Magic Café. The advice you have been given here is golden. We are very fortunate as younger performers to have the easy access to these materials and leaders in the profession. Your investment in time and money will be considerably less than any of those who worked through these issues in the "olden days". Ebooks for example are a fraction of the cost of bound books. That being said, you will still need to make a significant investment in time and practice to be good at anything. |

There are some “tools” out there that will be helpful (NEVER buy “tricks”), but with the right education you can build your own tools for almost anything you want to do. I’ve spent very little on actual materials: envelopes and tablets, Sharpies and DE Markers, a few odds and ends from Hobby Lobby or Harbor Freight. Eventually I’ll buy some specific tech, but for now part of the fun is figuring out how to do it “old school”. And going back to your O.P., a couple of my most “powerful” effects use a very simple card force, and I get asked about them all the time. Go slow and THINK about what you have right in your hands. Like grandma said, chew each bite 20 times. Read and digest, live with it for a while, make it yours. Personal example, the local club just hosted a Joshua Jay lecture, in which he demonstrated an effect he calls “Sherlock”, mental magic that actually looks like mentalism (it’s his handling!) I had a show coming up, not for Mentalism but as a Magic emcee. I spent some time thinking about what I had that would play quickly, be portable, provide interaction, and actually fool AND entertain the audience. Sherlock was a shoo-in, but I had to make some adaptations. (I emailed Josh and he wrote back “Hooray!”) Of course, I “knocked ‘em dead” [modesty deleted]. At the next club meet, that’s what we talked about! We all heard the same instructions, we all knew how to do and how to build. I had the insight because I spent the time. Anybody else could have gotten it, but I took the time! Long-winded version of, take your time and THINK about what you have. Make it yours.
...what if I could read your mind?

13 Steps is the must take first step. There's a chance other books will be hard to follow unless you have that basic foundation.

Personally I would read Bob's volume 2 fundamentals before 13 steps. 13 steps is a very dry read and is far easier to work through once the bug has bitten. Bob's book will also give 13 steps much more of a context. Likewise once you have absorbed the first 115 pages of Bobs book you will have a better idea of which of the 13 steps apply to you and which don't.
