Hello everyone,
I was wondering how many famous magicians have been also college teachers... I know some of them such as Allan Ackerman who teaches at Community College of SouthernNV or Barrie Richardson who used to be a college professor. Best Al |

There are a few people around here in this forum who have taught college classes. How many of them are full-time professors (you know, doing it for a living rather than having a real job)? Dunno.
Of course, the Professor wasn't a professor. But who wants to be a professor if you can be the Professor? |

Ronald Graham, perhaps.
He's better known for juggling. But he co-authored at least one book and some papers on, or connected to, magic. I'd bet money that he knows at least one good card trick.

If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

My ex-cat was named "Muffin". "Vomit" would be a better name for her. AKA "The Evil Ball of Fur".

I know at least two collectors (with seriously huge magic collections) that are college professors. One teaches biology, the other physics. I know another gentleman, who teaches high school, but with many prestigious accolades for his work. He just sold off one of the largest Thayer collections I have ever seen. Although they are hobbyist performers, I would consider them to be magicians because of their contributions to the art.
I also just remembered Charles Pecor, a retired professor from Macon, GA.

The late Looy Simonoff was also a math professor, with Allan Ackerman, at UNLV.
I was a math major at UNLV my first year of college, 1997. I was just starting to get into magic. But, like so many teenagers, I thought I knew way more than I actually did. When other students saw me fiddle with cards, they would always mention this math professor (Ackerman) who was also an amazing magician, and that I should stop by and say hello. In my arrogance, I never thought it would be worth my time. But at some point I had to kill 20 minutes or so, and I figured *I'd* do *him* the great honor of stopping by his office, and maybe teach him something from Expert Card Technique. Luckily, I didn't have a chance to embarrass myself before he showed me a trick or two -- and then I started to get a sense of how deep those waters ran. When this happened, I was already friendly with Looy. But I knew him only as a math professor (and scrabble player), and not at all as a magician. Later that week I told him my Ackerman story, and Looy innocently replied, "Oh, you're a magician? I know a card trick or two." Then he proceeded to blow my mind yet again. That was a good week for me... I learned a little magic, and a lot of humility. |

Do adjunct (part-time, underpaid, no benefits) community college instructors count? Guilty as charged....

Are you famous as a magician? No. I admit that I overlooked the "famous" qualifier in the opening post.
