When I worked at a the Rainforest Café in Nashville I did take tips when they were offered. I felt that it was a sign of the appreciation for the entertainment that I provided. That being said I did not wear a "Tips Appreciated" pin or anything. What is your opinion on accepting tips if you are a paid entertainer for a restaurant?

I always take them, its rare here in Spain, but I never refuse them. They have obviously enjoyed what I did.

Greg, you will find many threads on this subject in the Table Hoppers forum. It is a worthy subject of discussion and I can see both sides of the argument.
My view is this: 1) I never solicit tips in anyway. 2) I always accept tips graciously. Who am I to judge the appropriateness of a tip? Its my view people don't part with their money easily. If they want to give me money I take it! Its their choice. In some circumstances it may even border on rudeness not to accept a tip! Just my humble opinion.

Accepting tips graciously is professional behavior. Soliciting them not so much.

Before you do anything, check with the management to get their polices and thoughts.
If tips are a part of your pay, take them. If not then do what pleases those who hired you. Tom

I think it really boils down to one thing: Is management aware that you are accepting tips. If not, I would never accept a tip.
Yesterday I worked a festival and after one of my performances a gentleman came up and tried to give me a tip. I declined the tip because I am paid by the management to perform there and I had no prior discussion about tips. If I want to accept tips, it will be stated in my contract and reviewed prior to my appearance. |

I used to accept every tip I was offered. I would usually respectfully decline the tip and if offered or insisted, I would then take it.
I then started working nicer restaurants and the tips would come more often but I discovered that if I accepted a tip that was not offered in a discreet manner, the other tables were more reluctant to want me to perform for them. They just assumed they had to tip me. I then only would accept a tip if it was offered in a handshake and made beforehand. Once I started performing regularly and in much nicer restaurants, I would only accept a tip if it were a twenty or more. One of the main reasons I am cautious to accept gratuity anymore was because of an incident I had several years ago. A gentleman had me over to perform for him and some collegues after a golf game one evening. He handed me a $50 bill in the lobby and asked me to stop by. I did stop by and performed for about 10-15 minutes. He asked for my card and wanted to book me for a private gig. Several days later, he called and we discussed the venue and when it came time to talk fee, I told him my rate for the evening (2 hours) was $1500. There was a long pause and then he said, "...but I gave you $50 last week to stop by my table. Now you want $1500?!" In his mind, he already established what my services and time was worth. I tried to explain to him that was my typical rate and he refused to pay it because he couldn't justify the difference. So...before you accept a tip, consider what consequences will happen AFTER you accept it. |
