Hi all,
I've been reading quite a few threads regarding the flagstaff production. For the last few years I've been thinking about putting this effect into my show as I think it would be a great finale. My question relates to the folding of the flag. Is there a particular way to fold the flag ready for production? or is it trial and error? Is this discussed / covered in Rice's Encyclopedia? ( I have the dvd version) Thank you for any advice you can give. Kind regards - Damian |

If you read the 'readme' on the disc, you will not it is searchable for each volume. So open each volume and use the "find" option under edit on the menu bar. Yes, it is explained in the Encyclopedia and other books like, "The Magic of Faucette Ross", for use with the Flag Staff apparatus.

I have two Abbott Flag Staffs which I might be willing to part with. Also have a 6 foot Abbott Rainbow Silk. The silk has a ribbon reinforcement sewn to one edge. One is the large and one is the small staff. Both staffs are 'like new'. The silk has been used, but not abused.

Hi Bill and Dick,
Thank you for such a quick reply and the recommendation of 'The Magic of Faucette Ross' I only purchased my copy of the dvd a couple of days ago and I'm a it like a kid at Christmas not knowing which present (chapter) to open first. Dick, I already purchased a flagstaff earlier today from a secondhand magic dealer. It's a solid brass one which I believe (from reading posts on here) is an early version of the prop. Thank you for your kind offer, should my routine work as well as I hope (envisage) it will I may well be getting back to you Thank you once again for a helpful pointer on the Rice dvd. I'm really loving reading through this forum. |

I usually hold the silk so that it's hanging down from the staff, which is parallel to the floor. This means the silk is hanging down from one side. Collapse the staff. Accordian fold the silk one way (left to right), then accordian fold that narrow band the other way (top to bottom).

I fold it the same way that Donald folds his and works great every time. I put it in a top hat on my table with the protruding end resembling a magic wand. At the end of all school shows, I pull it out of the top hat.

Cheers Donald and Dan for your methods. I'm currently waiting for the delivery of my flagstaff. CAn't wait to get get it and start rehearsing the new show ending.
I have a giant silk Union Flag silk which I'll have made into the flag, if it fits. Hopefully it's not too large. |

Donald,
Your silk looks familiar as I made several up for Duane Laflin to sell. Richard

Yes, I bought two of them (flagstaff with colourful flag) from Duane Laflin at least 10 years ago, I think. The flags are very beautiful, in my opinion.
One of the staffs had a problem with the eyelet and ring breaking free from the pole (welding or soldering came loose), so I'll need to replace the flagstaff at one point. I think the staff itself was made in India (maybe Sam Delal). I still use the other flagstaff. Sometime I should replace both of the staffs themselves with better models -- maybe Abbotts or Gen Grant (if you can still find them), but keep the flags. At the time I bought mine, Duane also sold flagstaffs with the American Flag on them. Because I'm in Canada, it didn't make sense for an American flag to appear in my show, so I bought the models with the colourful flags. I don't see the flagstaffs on the Laflin Magic website any more, but I think the equivalent India model (with American Flag) is available on the Magic Depot website. But like I said, the next staffs I'd like to buy will be better quality. D

P.S. The Hocus Pocus website also has the India models of flagstaffs with American flags.

Here's a brief, silent video clip that I filmed on super8mm in the 70's that includes part of Joe and Georgi Smiley's flashy silk production routine at an amusement park in Norfolk, Virginia. Joe produces two large flagstaffs with enormous silks at the end of the :30 second clip:
